The message “Your organization has disabled Claude subscription access for Claude Code” does not mean your account has been banned. If it has been banned, that is it: the account cannot be restored. Here, the organization you signed into has disabled subscription access to Claude Code, and another `/login` with the same account will produce the same error.

Claude Code immediately offers 2 options: use an Anthropic API key or ask your administrator to enable access. A key may seem like the fastest option, but using the API is incredibly expensive: 20 times more expensive than a subscription. So first check which account you are signed into, and leave the key for later.

Here is the order: check `/status`, remove any key picked up unintentionally, and sign into the correct account. If that still does not help, the remaining option is to email the administrator. Let’s go.

Additional instructions are in the [Ailoot documentation](https://ailoot.ai/docs/).

Key takeaway

Briefly: this is an organization setting on Anthropic’s side, and repeating /login will not remove it. Open /status and check the sign-in method, organization, and email address. If it is the wrong organization, sign out with /logout and sign into your own account with a subscription. If the organization is correct, contact the administrator. If you are the administrator and cannot find where to enable access, contact Anthropic support.

## What does “organization has disabled subscription access” mean in Claude Code?

Here is the full message:

In other words: “Your organization has disabled access to Claude Code through a Claude subscription. Use an Anthropic API key instead, or ask your administrator to enable access.”

The setting is stored on Anthropic’s server; you cannot change it from your computer. Restarting or reinstalling Claude Code will therefore do nothing. Check which organization you signed into and whether it is the one you intended.

## Step 1. Check which account you are signed into

Enter this in Claude Code, in the same window where you write tasks:

```
/status
```

Look at 3 lines: sign-in method, organization, and email address. If both a sign-in and an API key are configured, `/status` marks the option that is not currently being used.

Compare this with how you intended to work:

- **Personal Pro or Max subscription.** Sign in through your claude.ai account.
- **Team or Enterprise subscription.** Use the claude.ai account invited by your team administrator.
- **Claude Console.** Sign-in for companies that pay for API usage separately from a subscription. An administrator must invite you to Console first.

If you purchased a personal subscription but `/status` shows the organization of the company you work for, you signed into the wrong place. Step 3 explains how to fix this.

If you are building your own projects with AI agents, you can find additional instructions in the [Ailoot documentation](https://ailoot.ai/docs/).

## Why I do not recommend getting an API key straight away

In the work scenario described here, a subscription is chosen for working in VS Code rather than the API: the API can also be used, but the costs may be substantially higher.

In this scenario, Anthropic keys are used for what runs inside the service, on the website itself. Code is written using a subscription.

Anthropic itself says that a key associated with a disabled or expired organization can also produce sign-in errors. An old key from a disabled organization will therefore not help here.

## Step 2. Remove a key that was picked up automatically

Check whether Claude Code is using an old key. If the `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` variable is set on your computer and you have ever answered “yes” when asked whether to use it, Claude Code uses the key instead of your subscription. In that case, `/status` lists the key as the current sign-in method. If you have not set up a key and none appears in `/status`, skip this step.

What to do:

1. Open `/config` and turn off the `Use custom API key` toggle. It only appears when the `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` variable is set.
2. Alternatively, close Claude Code and remove the variable in the terminal you launch it from. On macOS and Linux:

```bash
unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY
claude
```

In PowerShell on Windows:

```
Remove-Item Env:ANTHROPIC_API_KEY
```

3. Enter `/status` again and check that the key is no longer active.

The `unset` command removes the variable only in that terminal window. If the key reappears after restarting, it is specified in the startup settings: ask the person who configured it to remove it. Do not forward the key to anyone or show it in screenshots: the name of the sign-in method is enough for the check.

## Step 3. Sign into the correct account

If `/status` showed the wrong organization, you need to sign out and back in. Enter:

```
/logout
```

Then launch `claude` again: after signing out, it will take you through the initial setup and sign-in again. Choose sign-in through claude.ai and the account that holds your subscription.

For team access, sign in with the email address that received the administrator’s invitation. On a work computer, an administrator can restrict sign-in to their organization using the `forceLoginMethod` and `forceLoginOrgUUID` settings. In that case, signing into another organization through claude.ai will produce an error, and a key from an environment variable will not be accepted at startup. Do not bypass this on a work computer; contact the administrator.

If Claude keeps asking you to sign in again after you have signed in, that is a different problem, covered [in a separate article](https://ailoot.ai/blog/en/claude-keeps-asking-to-sign-in/).

## Step 4. Contact the administrator

If `/status` shows the correct organization but the error remains, only the administrator can resolve it. Send them:

- the exact error text and the time it appeared;
- how you intended to work: a personal subscription, a team subscription, or Console;
- the sign-in method, organization, and email address from `/status`;
- what you have already done: removed the key and signed out and back in.

Ask them to enable Claude Code access for your organization. If you are the administrator and cannot find where to enable it, contact [Anthropic support](https://support.claude.com).

## What to use while access is disabled

For me, Claude Code is the smartest code-production machine. I try everything, work with everything, and nothing is better. But if you cannot get it working, use ChatGPT Codex: getting access is easier there, with fewer blocks. If access to Claude is disabled, move to working with Codex.

Which Claude plan to choose when moving to a personal subscription is covered [in a separate article](https://ailoot.ai/blog/en/which-claude-plan/).

You can encounter this error on either a work computer or a personal one. Compare your situation with the checks above.

## Questions about Claude Code: Subscription Access Disabled — What to Do

### Why does reinstalling Claude Code leave this error unchanged?

Subscription access is controlled by the organization on the server. Check the sign-in method, organization, and email in /status; if the organization is correct, the administrator or Anthropic support must resolve access.

### How can I tell whether an old API key is taking precedence?

Read the active sign-in method in /status. If a custom key is active unintentionally, disable it in /config or remove ANTHROPIC_API_KEY from the launch environment, then check /status again without exposing the key.
