If GitHub has not sent a verification email, go to Settings → Emails and click Resend verification email beneath your address. The link in the email lasts 24 hours: if you are too late, request a new one.

GitHub stores projects as cloud storage for code and remembers every change. But until your email is verified, GitHub will not let you create a repository. A repository is what it calls a project's folder in the cloud.

Below are all the cases in order: no email, a link that opens an error, an address that is already in use, and a restricted account. Let's go through them.

Key takeaway

Request another verification email in Settings → Emails using the Resend verification email button. The link in the email is valid for 24 hours; after that, you need a new one. If a fresh link opens an error, sign out of GitHub, restart your browser, sign in to the correct account, and open the link again. The error “Email is already verified by another user” means the address is already verified in another account: remove it from that account or use another address. GitHub does not verify disposable email addresses.

## What should I check if GitHub does not send a verification email?

First, check your Spam folder and, in Gmail, the Promotions tab as well. In Settings → Emails, check that there is no typo in the address.

If there is no email, request a new one:

1. On GitHub, click your profile photo in the upper-right corner, then **Settings**.
2. In the sidebar, under **Access**, select **Emails**.
3. Beneath the address you are verifying, click **Resend verification email**.
4. Open the email from GitHub and follow the link.

After you follow the link, GitHub will open your account's home page and show a banner confirming that your email has been verified.

If the second email does not arrive either, add another address in the same section, such as Gmail, and verify it. A GitHub account can have any number of email addresses, and GitHub itself treats an address that cannot receive its emails as unverified.

## The email arrived, but the link opens an error

Check when the email arrived. If more than 24 hours have passed, the link no longer works. Return to Settings → Emails and request a new email.

If the link is less than a day old but GitHub still shows an error, check that you are signed in to the correct account. GitHub recommends this sequence:

1. Sign out of your GitHub account.
2. Close your browser and open it again.
3. Sign in to the account whose email you are verifying.
4. Follow the link in the email again.

## Why verify your email if Claude Code works with GitHub?

You used to need to know how to use GitHub and watch at least a couple of tutorials. Now you can simplify the process: ask Claude Code to help you connect it. Tell it, “Listen, we need to connect GitHub. Write out all the steps so that we can connect my GitHub here.” It tells you where to click and where to sign in. After that, it creates, updates, and deletes repositories itself. We make the repository private.

None of this will work with an unverified email address. GitHub will not let you create a repository or authorize third-party applications for the account. Email notifications will not arrive either.

## “Email is already verified by another user”

The full message is: `Error adding EMAIL: Email is already verified by another user`. Your address is already verified in another GitHub account.

There are 2 options here. If that account is yours, sign in to it, remove the address in its email settings, and return to the new account. If the old account has commits (saved code changes), add the address back there without verifying it: this keeps those commits associated with the old account. If that account is not yours, use another email address you own for GitHub.

## Which email address to use for GitHub

GitHub does not verify disposable email addresses. If you want to hide your address in commits, GitHub offers a `noreply` address for that purpose. It does not replace your account's real email address.

Most of us link everything to a Google email address: ChatGPT, Codex, and Claude Code. Email security therefore needs the same careful attention as messenger security. Even more, in fact. Email is how passwords for everything else are reset: once someone takes over your email, all the problems begin. If someone gains access to your Google email, they can go to GitHub and take the source code of all your projects.

For the email address you link to GitHub:

- enable two-factor authentication and, for quick sign-in, a passkey (a sign-in key on your device);
- add a phone number for recovery.

And the business should always own all access: email, domain, hosting, and repositories.

Choosing an email address for registering with AI services is covered [in a separate article](https://ailoot.ai/blog/en/claude-registration-email/).

## GitHub restricted the account and asks you to change your email

These steps apply only if GitHub itself displays a message saying that your account is restricted and explicitly says that you must change the address to restore access.

1. Add another, non-disposable address and make it your primary address.
2. Verify the new primary address.
3. Remove the previous address from the account.
4. Contact [GitHub Support](https://support.github.com/) and ask them to review the restriction.

In settings, the sequence is: open **Settings → Emails**, enter the new address in **Add email address**, and click **Add**. Under **Primary email address**, select it and click **Save**. Verify it through the email first, then remove the old address using the trash icon beside it.

## What next

Your email is verified, and the banner has appeared. You can now connect GitHub to Claude Code and store your projects there.

What the coding assistant GitHub Copilot offers for free, and where its limits end, is covered [in a separate article](https://ailoot.ai/blog/en/github-copilot-free-plan/). Whether you can use someone else's GitHub code in your own product and sell it is covered [in a separate article](https://ailoot.ai/blog/en/github-code-commercial-licenses/).

If you encounter a problem, note the stage at which it occurs: the email did not arrive, the link did not open, or the address was already in use.

## Questions about GitHub Is Not Sending a Verification Email: What to Do | Ailoot

### What if a fresh GitHub verification link still opens an error?

Check that you are signed in to the account whose address you are verifying. Sign out, close and reopen the browser, sign in to that account, and try the fresh link again; links older than 24 hours need to be replaced.

### Does a GitHub noreply address replace my account email?

No. The noreply address can hide your address in commits, but the account still needs a real address you can receive and verify. GitHub does not verify disposable email addresses.
