Claude has a free entry point and three paid options, and at first glance the difference between them fits in one line: the more expensive it is, the more you can do. In reality, the choice is more complicated. You pay for volume of work, while almost all features are available even on the mid-tier plan, so it is easy to overpay for something you do not use.

I’m breaking down what is shown on Claude’s official pricing page as of late summer 2026: what each plan offers, how Pro differs from Max, what lies behind the 5x and 20x limits, and which option suits whom. I’ll cover the price, cancellation, and access conditions separately, without promises of magical workarounds.

## What plans does Claude offer, and what are you paying for?

<div class="aside" data-semantic="key-takeaway" role="note" aria-label="Key points in this section">

Key points

Claude has four options: free Free at 0 dollars, Pro at 20 dollars per month, Max from 100 dollars per month, and team plan Team. Almost all paid plans have the same features, and you pay for volume: how many requests you can make during a five-hour window and over a week. The more expensive the plan, the later you hit the limit. The choice comes down to how much you actually use Claude.

</div>

Claude has four plans, three of them paid. Free is for getting acquainted and everyday questions, Pro for daily work, Max for those who spend all day in Claude, and Team for a team. I’ll talk about the team plan separately at the end, but first, the personal plans, because the question “which one should I get?” is usually about them.

The main thing to understand right away is that you pay for volume. Almost all of Claude’s capabilities are already available on Pro, and Max does not add anything fundamentally new in terms of abilities. Max simply lets you work longer without hitting the ceiling. So the choice is about your workload, while the checkmarks in the table for paid plans are almost identical.

Anthropic measures volume through usage limits, which reset every five hours, and paid plans also have a weekly limit on top. I’ll explain what that means in practice, and why there is no number of messages, in a separate section below. First, in order: what the free plan offers, what Pro unlocks, why you might need Max, and how to choose between them.

## What does free Claude actually offer, and where does it fall short?

<div class="aside" data-semantic="key-takeaway" role="note" aria-label="Key points in this section">

Key points

The free Free plan gives you a full-featured chat on the website, in the apps, and on desktop, code generation, web search, memory between conversations, file handling, and code execution. That is more than enough for everyday questions and getting acquainted. Its limit is volume: the free plan has the lowest limit, and it runs out quickly; Claude Code and advanced features are not included. Free does not hold up as an everyday work tool.

</div>

Claude’s free plan is a real plan, not a storefront dummy. According to the official description, Free includes chat on the website, in mobile and desktop apps, code generation and data work, web search, memory between conversations, file creation with code execution, and extended thinking for complex tasks. That is enough for someone who simply wants to try it or asks Claude everyday questions.

The wall comes with volume. Anthropic explicitly says that Free covers everyday questions and has the lowest limit of all the plans:

<figure>
<blockquote>
<p>The free plan covers everyday questions. Pro gives you at least 5x more usage per five-hour window than Free.</p>
</blockquote>
<figcaption>— Anthropic, https://claude.com/pricing</figcaption>
</figure>

The second limitation matters more to those who came for work: the free plan does not include Claude Code, unlimited projects, or access to some models. In other words, the terminal tool that many people look at Claude for in the first place is simply unavailable on Free. It is included only in paid plans.

So free Claude is a good trial and a chat tool for infrequent tasks. You can use it to figure out whether Claude suits you at all. You will not be able to use it every day or, especially, write code in the terminal; for that, you need at least Pro.

## Claude Code pricing plans: what does Pro unlock for 20 dollars? {#what-does-pro-unlock-for-20-dollars-and-who-will-find-it-enough}

<div class="aside" data-semantic="key-takeaway" role="note" aria-label="Key points in this section">

Key points

Pro costs 20 dollars per month when paid monthly, or 17 per month when paid annually. For that price, you get at least 5x more volume than on Free, plus Claude Code, unlimited projects, access to Research, and all models. It is Claude’s workhorse: for most people who use it every day for work and coding, Pro is enough, and they do not need the top-tier plan.

</div>

Pro is the mid-tier plan and the main work option. According to the official page, it costs 20 dollars when paid monthly, while annual billing is cheaper at 17 dollars per month, but 200 dollars for the whole year is charged upfront.

Here is what you get for that price beyond the free plan:

1. At least 5x more volume per five-hour window than on Free.
2. Claude Code, Cowork, Design, and Science — advanced tools that are not available on the free plan.
3. Unlimited projects, so you can organize chats and documents by topic.
4. Access to Research mode and a larger selection of Claude models.

The main thing that changes with Pro is that the biggest pain of the free plan goes away. The limit stops running out in the middle of work. On Free, you hit the wall after an hour of active use; on Pro, there is enough volume for a full workday of ordinary use. That is why people pay.

Claude Code deserves a separate mention. On paid plans, it is included and draws volume from the same shared pool as chats. That means that for 20 dollars, you get both the web version and a terminal coding tool, with no separate fee for it.

Who will find Pro enough? If Claude is part of your daily work — writing text, breaking down tasks, editing a project, running code in the terminal for several hours a day — twenty dollars covers almost everything.

## Why get Max for 100 dollars or more?

<div class="aside" data-semantic="key-takeaway" role="note" aria-label="Key points in this section">

Key points

Max starts at 100 dollars per month and is available only month to month. For that price, you choose how many times more volume to get: 5x or 20x more than Pro. It also includes higher response length limits, early access to new features, and priority during peak hours. Max raises the usage allowance; it does not remove session and weekly limits. It makes sense when you work with Claude all day and Pro feels too restrictive.

</div>

Max does not make Claude smarter. It lets Claude work longer without hitting the limit. According to the official description, it includes everything in Pro, and on top of that you choose the volume multiplier:

<figure>
<blockquote>
<p>Everything in Pro, plus: a choice of 5x or 20x more usage than Pro. Higher response length limits for all tasks. Early access to advanced Claude features. Priority access during high-demand periods.</p>
</blockquote>
<figcaption>— Anthropic, https://claude.com/pricing</figcaption>
</figure>

The pricing page lists Max at “from 100 dollars per month.” That is the starting price for the 5x option. The official Max help page checked on October 19, 2026 lists web subscriptions at $100 per month for Max 5x and $200 per month for Max 20x. Mobile pricing may vary; check your own checkout before paying. Both options are available only month to month; Max has no annual billing.

What Max actually offers beyond Pro:

| What it offers          | Pro         | Max 5x          | Max 20x         |
|-------------------------|-------------|-----------------|-----------------|
| Volume vs. Pro          | base        | 5x more         | 20x more        |
| Response length limits  | standard    | higher          | higher          |
| Early access to features| no          | yes             | yes             |
| Priority during peak hours | no       | yes             | yes             |
| Monthly web price       | 20 dollars  | 100 dollars     | 200 dollars     |

Who is it worth it for? People who keep Claude running all day: large projects, long sessions without breaks, coding in the terminal from morning to evening. If you regularly use up all your Pro volume and hit the wall in the middle of the workday, each time that happens costs you time, and moving to Max pays off.

Who would find it excessive? Anyone who does not reach Pro’s ceiling. If you have never seen a message about exhausting your limit, or only hit it once a month, the extra cost for Max will be wasted. The rule of thumb is simple: as long as Pro does not feel restrictive, there is no reason to pay for the top-tier plan.

## What do the 5x and 20x limits mean, and why is there no number of messages?

<div class="aside" data-semantic="key-takeaway" role="note" aria-label="Key points in this section">

Key points

Claude’s limit is calculated in volume of work, not messages, during a five-hour window that resets on a rolling basis. Paid plans also have a weekly limit on top. The 5x and 20x multipliers show volume relative to the adjacent plan; they do not correspond to a specific number of requests. Exactly how much you can do depends on the length of conversations, the model you choose, and the features you use, so Anthropic does not specify a fixed number of messages.

</div>

This is where the main confusion about choosing a plan hides. People expect a clear number, “so many messages per day,” but there is none. Anthropic measures usage volume and explains it directly:

<figure>
<blockquote>
<p>How much you can do depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the model you choose, and the features you use, so there is no fixed number of messages.</p>
</blockquote>
<figcaption>— Anthropic, https://claude.com/pricing</figcaption>
</figure>

Here is how it works. Each plan has a limit that resets every five hours on a rolling window. Paid plans also have a weekly limit on top of that. An important detail: chat on the website and in the apps, and work in Claude Code all draw volume from one shared pool. So if you work heavily in the terminal in the morning, there will be less left for evening chat.

Now for the multipliers. When Anthropic writes “5x” or “20x,” it is a comparison with the adjacent plan, and the number alone does not say how much volume you get. Pro gives you at least 5x more than Free; Max gives you 5x or 20x more than Pro. This gives the following picture of volume per five-hour window:

| Plan | Volume per window relative to adjacent plan |
|---------|---------------------------------------------|
| Free    | base, the lowest                            |
| Pro | at least 5x more than Free |
| Max 5x  | 5x more than Pro                            |
| Max 20x | 20x more than Pro                           |

What to do when you hit the limit. Anthropic offers three options: wait for the reset, move to a higher plan, or, if you are already on a paid plan, enable extra usage billing at standard API rates and keep working. You can see your current usage in Settings, in the Usage section. For a separate explanation of where to check your remaining allowance and how to read these limits, see [how many tokens Claude Pro and Max provide](https://ailoot.ai/blog/en/claude-pro-max-usage-limits/).

## How do you figure out which Claude plan you need?

<div class="aside" data-semantic="key-takeaway" role="note" aria-label="Key points in this section">

Key points

Base your choice on your workload; the feature list is secondary here. Everyday questions and trying Claude out — free Free. Daily work with text and code — Pro at 20 dollars; that is the best fit for most people. All-day Claude use on large projects with the limit running out — that is when Max makes sense. Start with the lower plan: you can move up at any time, and unused time will be credited.

</div>

The choice is simpler than it seems if you look at your workload; the feature table is not much help here. The features are the same across plans; the difference is volume. Here is what to choose for each situation:

| Your workload | What to get | How much |
|----|----|----|
| Everyday questions, trying it out, occasional tasks | Free | 0 dollars |
| You work with Claude every day, including coding | Pro | 20 dollars per month |
| You use Claude all day and hit Pro’s limit | Max 5x | from 100 dollars per month |
| Heavy projects without breaks; 5x volume is not enough | Max 20x | 200 dollars per month (web) |

Practical rule: start with the lower plan. You can move from Pro to Max at any time, and that is better than getting an expensive plan right away just in case. If you move up before the end of the paid period, Anthropic will credit the unused time toward the new plan, so you will not overpay for the transition.

And a separate point about what matters more than the plan itself. An expensive plan gives you more volume, but it does not give you a method. Results depend on how you organize your work with AI: what you put in the context, how you structure your project knowledge, and how well Claude understands your logic.

## Annual or monthly billing, and how do you cancel a subscription?

<div class="aside" data-semantic="key-takeaway" role="note" aria-label="Key points in this section">

Key points

Annual billing for Claude is cheaper than monthly billing, but it is available only for Pro and Team: Pro comes to 17 dollars per month instead of 20, with a full year charged upfront. Max has no annual billing, only monthly. Cancellation is straightforward: after the paid period ends, the account moves to the free plan, while data, chats, and projects stay in place; nothing is deleted.

</div>

There are two simple things to know about how Claude charges. The first is that an annual subscription is cheaper. Anthropic says that annual plans are designed to cost less than monthly ones, and annual billing is available for Pro and Team. For Pro, it is 17 dollars per month instead of 20, but the full amount, 200 dollars, is charged upfront for the year. Max has no annual billing; both of its options are available only month to month.

If you already pay monthly and decide to switch to annual, you can do so in Settings, in the Billing section, and unused time will be credited toward the first annual bill.

The second thing is cancellation. It is designed without traps. Anthropic describes it this way:

<figure>
<blockquote>
<p>When you cancel, your data is not deleted. Your chats, projects, and files remain in your account, although some features are unavailable on the free plan. For Pro and Max, the account moves to the free plan after the period ends.</p>
</blockquote>
<figcaption>— Anthropic, https://claude.com/pricing</figcaption>
</figure>

So canceling a subscription does not mean losing your work. Everything you have accumulated in Claude stays there; the account simply returns to the free plan and its limits. You should know that payments are generally non-refundable, except in cases set out in the user agreement or required by local law. A separate article explains [how to get a refund for a Claude subscription](https://ailoot.ai/blog/en/claude-subscription-refund-cancel/).

## Is the Team plan useful, and when do you need it?

<div class="aside" data-semantic="key-takeaway" role="note" aria-label="Key points in this section">

Key points

Team is Claude for teams of 2 to 150 people: a shared bill, unified management, two seat types, and team features. A Standard seat costs 20 dollars per person per month with annual billing; a Premium seat costs 100 dollars. One person does not need Team; personal Pro covers solo work. Choose Team when several people work on tasks and need a shared setup.

</div>

Team stands apart from personal plans; it is a different product. It is designed for teams of 2 to 150 people and adds what collaborative work specifically needs: a shared bill for everyone, unified administration, a team set of skills and connections, and sign-in through a corporate login.

There are two types of seats in Team. A Standard seat gives you all of Claude’s capabilities and more volume than Pro, and costs 20 dollars per person per month with annual billing, or 25 monthly. A Premium seat gives you 5x more volume than Standard and costs 100 dollars per person per month with annual billing. You can mix them: some people on the team may need only Standard, while those who use Claude more heavily can get Premium.

One person does not need Team. Personal Pro at 20 dollars covers everything for solo work, and team features are simply not useful to one person. Team is worth considering only when several people are working on projects and a shared setup matters: one bill, shared settings, access control. While you work alone, your choices are Free, Pro, or Max.

## So which Claude plan should you choose?

<div class="aside" data-semantic="key-takeaway" role="note" aria-label="Key points in this section">

Key points

In short: Free for trying Claude out and everyday questions, Pro at 20 dollars for daily work with text and code, and Max from 100 dollars for all-day Claude use on heavy projects. Start with the lower plan and move up when you hit the limit: unused time will be credited when you switch. And remember the main thing: your method of working with AI drives the results; the plan is secondary.

</div>

Let’s put it all together. Claude’s paid plans have almost the same features; the difference is volume, so your choice depends on your workload.

If you are just trying Claude out or asking it everyday questions, get free Free; it is a real plan and does its job. If Claude has become your everyday work tool, including for coding in the terminal, your option is Pro at 20 dollars; it is the best fit for most people. If you spend all day in Claude on large projects and Pro feels too restrictive, then Max makes sense. If you work as a team, look at Team.

The main advice: do not get an expensive plan just in case. Start with the lower one and move up when you actually hit the wall. Anthropic will credit unused time when you switch, so you will not pay for volume you do not use.

And here is what matters more than any plan. An expensive plan gives you more volume, but it does not deliver results on its own. Claude produces garbage because it lacks context and structure; the cheap plan has nothing to do with it. That is fixed with a method; paying for the subscription does not solve it. If you want Claude to work reliably on any plan, look toward a method.
