## [devstral-small-2505](https://ailoot.ai/models/en/devstral-small-2505/)

Devstral Small 2505 is a text-only coding model from Mistral AI and All Hands AI. It is designed for software agents that explore a codebase, edit several files and use development tools, with a published 128K context window.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Devstral Small 2505 is the first Devstral Small release, developed by Mistral AI with All Hands AI for software engineering agents. It is a 24-billion-parameter model built for codebase exploration, tool use and changes across multiple files. The maker’s card describes it as text-only, with a 128K context window; the vision encoder was removed from the Mistral Small 3.1 model used for fine-tuning.

#### Give the agent a concrete development task

Describe the required behavior and the repository or relevant code it must work with. A useful task identifies the feature, the files or application area involved and the conditions that demonstrate completion. Include the observed error for a bug fix, or the expected user actions and data behavior for a new feature.

The maker’s example builds a one-page to-do application with FastAPI, React and SQLite. Its prompt lists adding, deleting and completing tasks and displaying the task list. Those requirements connect the generated interface with the application behavior and storage it needs. A follow-up then requests a specific improvement to the completed application.

#### Explore, edit and run through an application

The documented workflow uses an agent scaffold that can inspect repository files, make changes and run development tools. Devstral supplies the decisions and code; the surrounding agent executes tool actions and returns observations. Provide the project’s setup instructions and explain which checks should establish that the change works.

For a change spanning several files, ask the agent to identify the relevant dependencies before editing. Retain the tool observations with the resulting patch, so a proposed correction can be compared with what actually ran. A generated implementation becomes a working artifact when the application saves and executes it in the intended environment.

#### Use a repository analysis as a focused task

Another maker example asks the agent to inspect test coverage and produce plots. The workflow first explores the repository and its test configuration, then runs coverage and creates the visualization. A similar request should identify the repository, the measure to inspect and the output artifact, such as a chart and the files it summarizes.

The distinction between model output and executed evidence matters here. Ask for the resulting files and observations from the development tools, together with the explanation needed to interpret them. Keep a later revision focused on the observed behavior or a specific part of the artifact.

#### Preserve the release and working context

This entry retains the 2505 release described in the maker’s card. Later Devstral Small editions have their own identities. Use the selected model’s conversation and tool format, include relevant source material within the working context and leave room for the requested result. The card publishes local-inference and agent examples; their sample generation budgets are task settings rather than a universal output ceiling.

Practical task

### Plan a deletion fix across two files

Technical example in English

```
Plan a deletion fix across two files
Given these repository excerpts, propose a coordinated patch: api.py deletes a task by ID and always returns 204; store.py remove(id) silently ignores missing IDs. Requirement: an existing task returns 204 and a missing task returns 404. Show changes to both files and tests; preserve the DELETE route and successful deletion behavior.
```

#### Expected result

```
A patch split by api.py and store.py plus tests for existing and missing task IDs.
```

#### Check the result

```
The storage result reaches the handler so a missing task returns 404 without changing the successful status.
```
