About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Hermes 3 Llama 3.1 405B is Nous Research’s large generalist text model, developed through a full-parameter fine-tune of Llama 3.1 405B. The maker emphasises alignment to user instructions, steerability, roleplay, reasoning, multi-turn conversation and long-context coherence. The output is text, including answers, written content, code, structured records and function-call information.

#### The 405B edition

This is the large Hermes 3 profile, separate from the 70B companion and later Hermes 4 reasoning release. The manufacturer expands the earlier Hermes capabilities with improved function calling, structured outputs and code generation. Give a task its actual evidence and required final form instead of assuming that model scale supplies missing sources or a completion criterion.

For a document analysis, label the passages and identify the criteria for comparison. Ask for the relevant source beside each conclusion and specify the treatment of absent information. For a writing assignment, give the audience, tone and facts that must survive a revision. A practical prompt is: “Rewrite this explanation for the stated reader, preserve the defined terms and identify any unsupported claim that needs clarification.”

#### Prompt format and dialogue

Hermes 3 uses ChatML to separate system instructions, user messages and assistant replies. Its own template can construct the conversation and append the assistant-generation prefix. System instructions steer the role, rules and style; they are optional when the task does not require a special preamble.

A continuing conversation should keep source text distinct from instructions and preserve accepted facts in the relevant context. For roleplay, identify who controls each character and which events are established. For code, state the behaviour that changes and the contracts that remain intact. The desired artifact should remain visible through the dialogue.

#### Functions and source observations

The exact model card documents function signatures inside its tool-definition representation and a required response schema for the function name and arguments. The model generates tagged JSON call objects. The application parses and executes the selected operation, then returns its result in a named tool response. The next assistant answer can explain the actual data.

Give each function a clear purpose and precise parameter descriptions. Do not let a proposed lookup stand in for a returned source. Keep the observation associated with the selected operation so a final conclusion can identify what supports it. Generated code similarly remains a proposal until inspected and run in the intended environment.

#### JSON results, context and precision

Hermes 3’s JSON mode is trained with a system instruction containing the desired schema and requests a JSON object as the answer. Define the fields and how to represent missing or conflicting source values. Validate the structure and review the facts even when the object follows the schema.

The published configuration sets max\_position\_embeddings to 131,072. Budget instructions, documents, history, tool results and the response together; this field does not establish a separate universal output ceiling. The producer’s full model and separately published quantized variants have their own precision identities, so those variants should not be silently substituted for the named 405B profile.

A useful deliverable is a text or code artifact with its assumptions and source connections clear. Review it against the supplied requirements and actual observations. Hermes 3’s ChatML, function-call and JSON workflows remain distinct from Hermes 4’s later hybrid-thinking and interleaved-reasoning controls.

Practical task

### Rewrite a technical explanation for customers

Technical example in English

```
Rewrite a technical explanation for customers
Rewrite this explanation for customers in 80 words or fewer: 'We store an immutable invoice snapshot at purchase. Editing the catalog later changes future invoices but cannot alter that snapshot.' Preserve the meaning of immutable snapshot, explain the effect of a later catalog edit and identify any claim you would need clarified before promising invoice corrections.
```

#### Expected result

```
A concise customer-facing explanation and one separate clarification question about invoice corrections.
```

#### Check the result

```
The rewrite preserves the distinction between historical snapshots and future invoices without inventing a correction process.
```
