About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Riva-Translate-4B-Instruct-v2 is an NVIDIA text translation model supporting 37 languages and regional variants. It translates individual sentences and documents, accepting source text and producing a translation as text. The model is intended for translators, marketers and developers of multilingual material.

#### Language coverage

English and the following languages and variants are supported:

- Czech, Danish, German, Greek, European and Latin American Spanish, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, European and Brazilian Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Swedish, Estonian, Slovenian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian and Croatian.
- Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Korean, Arabic, Vietnamese, Turkish, Indonesian and Thai.

Language pairs are organized around English: from English to each of the other languages and in the reverse direction. Russian and Ukrainian have separate directions. For Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese, the regional variant or writing system is also selected separately.

#### Direction and examples

The system message specifies the language pair and the user message the text to translate. For example, `en-ru` means English-to-Russian translation, `ru-en` Russian-to-English and `en-uk` English-to-Ukrainian. Chinese provides the explicit designations `en-zh-cn` and `en-zh-tw`, and Portuguese `en-pt-pt` and `en-pt-br`.

The model supports several translation examples in a prompt. These can be presented as alternating user messages containing source text and responses containing translations. With this prompt structure, the model receives prepared pairs before new text. NVIDIA recommends a translation template with explicit source and target languages; without it, the result may be less suitable.

#### Size and training approach

The model is based on a decoder Transformer with approximately 4.18 billion parameters. It is obtained by fine-tuning a compressed and distilled base model. Training included continued pretraining and training from examples. Training data used pairs of source text and translations in varied styles, from conversational to formal. Context is up to 8K tokens.

#### Result characteristics

Translation depends on the application area, source-text quality and context. Errors in grammar and meaning are possible. A more precisely worded prompt can help improve the translation.

Practical task

### Translate a dispatch notice into Russian

Technical example in English

```
Translate a dispatch notice into Russian
Translate from English to Russian using the English-to-Russian direction en-ru in the existing translation template. Source text: 'Order AX-17 is ready for dispatch. Please confirm the delivery address before 16:00 on Friday. If the address is unchanged, no reply is required.' Keep the order identifier and time exact; return only the translation.
```

#### Expected result

```
A Russian translation preserving AX-17, Friday 16:00 and the conditional no-reply instruction.
```

#### Check the result

```
Check the no-reply condition is not inverted and no dispatch date is added.
```

Keep every complete returned response, file and content part.

Keep every choice and its content/tool calls/reasoning. In SSE assemble deltas by choice/tool index, retain the final finish reason and usage.

##### If the original response needs checking

Keep request/response IDs and headers. No generic text job retrieval URL is supplied.
