Can you pay for Claude with Apple Pay?
Key takeaway
You can't pay for Claude with Apple Pay, either on the website or in the app. The confusion comes from mixing up terms. Apple Pay is a way to tap your phone at a terminal instead of using a card. Apple ID is your account. The App Store is the store that processes purchases inside the app. The App Store processes Claude subscriptions, but people search for Apple Pay.
Because of this confusion, someone searches for how to pay for Claude with Apple Pay, finds an article about gift cards, and can't understand why nothing adds up.
- Apple Pay is a payment service. It supplies a linked card at the time of purchase: in a store, in a browser, or in an app. It has no money of its own; it passes along your bank card details. If the card is declined, Apple Pay won't help, because the card is still what pays. Apple Pay isn't listed among the payment methods on the Claude website at all.
- Apple ID (called Apple Account in recent system versions, and an Apple account in everyday speech) is an account. Purchases, subscriptions, and balance are linked to it. The account's region determines which store you see. You shouldn't change it just to make a purchase: that violates Apple's rules, and what happens when you buy in a way that bypasses a platform's rules is covered in the section about account access below.
- App Store is an app store. When you buy a subscription inside an app, the store processes the purchase, and the money reaches Anthropic through it. Anthropic confirms this explicitly.
For subscriptions purchased on our website, we only accept credit and debit cards. If you subscribed through Claude for iOS or Claude for Android, the available payment methods are determined by the Apple App Store or Google Play.
So a website subscription and an in-app subscription are two different agreements with different payment processors, and this will affect the price, cancellation, and refunds.
Checking whether the app is available in the App Store
You can check this yourself without installing anything: open Apple's service at https://itunes.apple.com/lookup in a browser, enter the app identifier in the id parameter, and put the country code in the country parameter.
The number 6473753684 is Claude's App Store app identifier. In the response from Apple's public service, the resultCount field shows how many apps were found. Data as of August 5, 2026:
| Country | resultCount |
|---|---|
| Belarus | 0 |
| Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan | 1 |
| Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Moldova, Ukraine, Turkey | 1 |
| United States, United Kingdom | 1 |
Zero means that the app does not exist in that country's store.
Anthropic's answer to this question is evasively worded. Its iOS installation help says that if you can't find the app, you may be in an unsupported region, using an unsupported device, or running a system version earlier than 17. There is a link to the list of countries, but it takes you to a separate page, while the installation page itself mixes the three reasons together and leaves people guessing which one applies to them.
Anthropic-supported countries
The list is at anthropic.com/supported-countries and consists of two alphabetical lists: first the countries with commercial API access, then the countries with access to Claude.ai.
| Country | Number of times it appears in the list shown |
|---|---|
| Belarus | 0 |
| China | 0 |
| Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine | 2 each |
Claude Code's system requirements have a separate “Location” item with a link to the same list of countries.
Access doesn't mean it will work. Practical materials: Ailoot documentation.
What breaks if you bought the subscription through the App Store?
Key takeaway
It goes like this: the money is charged, but the Claude account still has the free plan. Most often, the purchase is linked to one account while the person signs in with another, and the subscription can't be transferred between them. But that isn't always the case: some people had matching email addresses and it still didn't work. Anthropic engineers later acknowledged a synchronization bug on their end.
This section is useful regardless of where payment is made: the failure happens at the junction between two systems, and geography has nothing to do with it.
The failure usually works like this:
- Install the app and sign in with “Sign in with Apple,” with Hide My Email enabled.
- Claude receives a forwarding address that Apple provides in place of your real email address.
- The in-app purchase is linked specifically to that account.
- On the website, you sign in with your regular email and land in a different, free account.
- You can't transfer the subscription: you can't change the email address on a Claude account, according to Claude Support itself.
Sometimes it's simpler: the Apple account and the Claude account you use for work are just different, and you don't want to abandon the second one because all your conversations are there.
Anthropic introduced an in-app fix for this: open the app, tap your initials in the upper-right corner, go to Billing, and choose “Restore Purchase.” If the subscription is linked to the same account, it will appear.
If it doesn't appear, the remaining option is a refund, and that process is not simple: Apple handles the request, and Anthropic has no access to those charges.
Why doesn't Claude Code see an App Store subscription?
Key takeaway
A subscription bought through the app store is often not recognized in the terminal: Claude Code responds with a denial and says the account doesn't have access, even though the money was charged and the plan is visible in the phone app. Meanwhile, the service file shows an empty subscription type. Developers have been told about this repeatedly: some reports were closed with the note “not planned,” while others are still open.
This is a separate problem, and it hits exactly those who get Claude to work in the terminal. Someone pays for Max, but the terminal won't let them in.
Reports in the Claude Code issue tracker describe two symptoms: for a subscription bought through the App Store, the terminal responds with “Request not allowed,” or Max is recognized as Pro and usage is counted against Pro limits. Some of these reports were closed with the note “not planned,” while others are still open.
Three things follow from this:
- if you need Claude Code in the terminal, buying through the app store adds a separate risk that doesn't exist when paying on the website;
- Claude Code doesn't work on the free Claude plan at all;
- if the subscription isn't recognized, usage is calculated according to the lower plan, and your money runs out faster than you expect.
Claude Code requires a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, or Console account. The free Claude.ai plan does not include access to Claude Code.
How much each plan provides and where to check your remaining usage are covered separately in How many tokens Claude Pro and Max provide.
How much does a subscription cost in the app and on the website?
Key takeaway
Monthly Pro costs the same in both places, but annual Pro and both Max tiers cost noticeably more in the app store: the difference reaches fifty dollars a month. Anthropic explicitly warns that its published prices apply to subscriptions from the website, and prices in mobile apps may vary by platform.
Prices from Anthropic's pricing page and in-app purchases from the app listing in the US App Store, as of August 5, 2026:
| What you're buying | On the website | In the app | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro, monthly | $20 | $20.00 | none |
| Pro, annual | $200 | $214.99 | +$14.99 |
| Max 5x, monthly | $100 | $124.99 | +$24.99 |
| Max 20x, monthly | $200 | $249.99 | +$49.99 |
“It's always more expensive in the app” is false. It's specifically annual Pro and both Max tiers that cost more; monthly Pro costs exactly the same.
Anthropic spells this out on its page about the Max plan.
These prices are only for web subscriptions. Prices in mobile apps may vary depending on the app platform.
The store takes a share of each in-app purchase, and that share is built into the price. You can't calculate the exact commission percentage from this price difference: Apple's rate depends on the program the developer participates in, while the markup on Max is exactly one quarter, which doesn't match any of the rates. So there's no basis for attributing the markup specifically to the commission. The price difference itself is clearly visible in the table.
Max is sold monthly only; there is no annual plan.
How do you cancel a subscription and get a refund for an App Store purchase?
Key takeaway
Cancel where you signed up. The website account page can't see a subscription from the app store, but it is visible in the device settings' subscriptions section and in the app's Billing section. A refund follows the store's rules, and if the request is denied, Anthropic can't help, however much it might want to.
Anthropic states the rule this way.
You can cancel your Pro or Max subscription at any time by following the cancellation instructions for the platform on which you subscribed. The cancellation will take effect at the end of the current billing period.
How to cancel if you subscribed in the iOS app:
- Open the Claude app and tap your initials in the upper-right corner.
- Select Billing.
- Tap “Manage subscription” and follow the prompts.
- If you've already deleted the app, go to your device settings, tap your name, select “Subscriptions,” and cancel there.
The cancellation option is in the app. It's not in your website account: Billing there manages only subscriptions bought on the website, so people go there, don't find the button, and decide they can't cancel.
You must cancel at least 24 hours before the next charge, or you'll be charged for the next period.
Refunds are more complicated. Anthropic has a separate help page about them.
Apple processed the payment, so only Apple can review the request and issue a refund—our support team has no access to App Store charges and can't refund them. [...] Refunds for App Store purchases are provided at Apple's discretion.
The same Anthropic help page contains a detail that catches people twice: a refund request does not cancel the subscription. If you don't cancel it separately, the next period will be charged even while the refund for the previous one is under review.
Submit the request at reportaproblem.apple.com using the Apple account you bought it with; the status changes within a day or two.
Buying through the app store adds another risk on top of the usual ones: in a dispute, you are left between two companies, neither of which considers the issue its responsibility.
How can you check that the app is genuine and avoid handing over account access?
Key takeaway
The official app is identified by its “Seller” line. Separately, people are offered a way to top up their Apple account balance in exchange for access to it, and Apple explicitly calls this a sign of fraud.
What the official app looks like:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Claude by Anthropic |
| Seller | Anthropic PBC |
| Ratings in the US App Store | about 220,000, average 4.7 |
| Price of the app itself | free |
It's easy to copy the name and image; it's not easy to copy the “Seller” line in the store listing.
That's where the search query “what does the Claude App Store icon look like” comes from: people sense something is off and try to check the icon. You should check the “Seller” line, not the icon, and the genuine app lists Anthropic PBC there.
Fake websites are another issue. Download only from the official website; this rule applies to any tool.
Now, about the balance scheme. Apple describes it on its support page.
If someone claims they can add funds to your Apple account balance in exchange for your account details or access, or give you access to someone else's Apple account with apps and funds already purchased, you may be a target of a scam. Never share your Apple account details with anyone. Don't sign in to an Apple account that doesn't belong to you.
Apple is writing specifically about the scheme people are being offered online.
Giving your account details to strangers violates Apple's rules and can cost you both your money and your access.
What can you use to pay for Claude instead of Apple?
Key takeaway
Anthropic accepts only credit and debit cards on its website, so the whole question comes down to finding a card that works. The app store doesn't solve that problem, but it does charge more for some plans and adds the risk that the subscription won't be recognized in the terminal, along with someone else's refund rules. There is also usage-based payment by tokens and access to Claude models through cloud platforms—these are separate agreements with their own terms.
Here's how the options break down.
| Option | What you pay with | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Claude website | credit or debit card | |
| App from the App Store | in-app purchase | |
| API access | payment based on token usage | same list of countries, separate plan |
| Through third-party model providers | cloud platforms with access to Claude models | different agreement and different terms |
The last row is useful for anyone who needs a working tool for a task. Claude Code can work through more than just an Anthropic subscription. When choosing, it helps to calculate what costs less for your workload: a subscription or usage-based token charges.
If what matters is getting started, and you don't care which particular tool you use, see the review of free coding models. Some of them handle everyday tasks without a single payment.
What do people ask most often?
Key takeaway
These are the questions people search for on this topic: how to pay for Claude with Apple Pay, whether store gift cards work, what to do when a paid subscription isn't visible in the account, and whether Claude Pro and Claude Code use the same payment.
How do I pay for Claude with Apple Pay? You can't. Anthropic accepts only credit and debit cards on its website; digital wallets aren't among the payment methods.
I paid, but my account shows the free plan. What should I do? First check whether you're signed in to the right account on the website: if you signed in with Apple and Hide My Email was enabled, the account may have been created with a relay address. Then try “Restore Purchase” in the app's Billing section. If that doesn't help, request a refund through the store.
Does a Claude Pro subscription cover Claude Code? People often search for this as “pay for Claude Code from an iPhone”—they mean the same subscription, which is shared by the website, app, and terminal. Yes, Pro and Max include the web version, the app, and terminal access, and they share the same limits. But if you buy through the app store, the subscription sometimes isn't recognized in the terminal: Claude Code responds with a denial even though the money has been charged.
Where to start
Key takeaway
The first step is to stop looking for a way to pay through Apple and figure out what you actually need. The app store isn't the only way in: if you need a working tool for a specific task, some ways to get it cost less than a subscription and don't leave you subject to someone else's refund rules.
Steps to take if you came here wondering how to pay for Claude with Apple Pay:
- Decide what you need: a browser chat, a phone app, or terminal work. The choice depends on that.
- If you have already bought a subscription through the store and it is not working, check the Claude account and try “Restore Purchase” in the app’s Billing section. If needed, request a refund from Apple. Cancel the subscription separately if you do not want it to renew; a refund request alone does not cancel it.

Questions about Claude in the App Store: Payment, Restoring a Purchase, and Refunds | Ailoot
I paid in the iOS app but see a free Claude account. What should I check first?
Check that the website and app use the same Claude account, including any Apple relay email, then try Restore Purchase in the app’s Billing section. Apple handles a refund request for an App Store purchase.
Does requesting an App Store refund stop the next renewal?
No. Cancellation and a refund request are separate actions. Manage the subscription through the iOS app or Apple’s subscription settings, and submit the refund request to Apple separately if needed.
