What does it mean to “renew” a Claude subscription, and is there a button for it?
Key takeaway
Claude has no separate “renew” button. Pro and Max subscriptions are charged automatically by default at the end of each billing period to the card linked to the account. There is nothing to renew manually. The question “how do I renew?” really means “how do I make sure a card that will process the payment is linked to the account?”
People search for “how to renew Claude,” open settings, and can’t find a button. It isn’t there, and that’s normal. Anthropic describes renewal this way.
After you sign up for Pro, your subscription will automatically renew by default at the end of each billing period (monthly or annually).
That means Claude renews automatically as long as a working card is linked to the account and you haven’t clicked “cancel.”
Next, I’ll go through when the charge is made, why a payment fails, what happens to access, how to cancel and get a refund, and what the errors mean when Claude stops letting you in. Each section stands on its own, so you don’t have to read them in order.
When is the renewal fee charged, and how can you find out the date?
Key takeaway
The renewal fee is charged at the end of the billing period: monthly or annually, depending on the plan you chose when signing up. The date is shown under Settings > Billing in your account. You can’t change the billing date directly: if it doesn’t work for you, cancel the subscription and sign up again on the date you want; the cycle will start from then.
The billing period is set once, when you sign up for Pro or Max. The monthly plan charges you once a month on the same date, while the annual plan charges you once a year. Pro costs $20 per month, and Max starts at $100 per month.
You can see the next charge date and current card in the same place as the rest of your billing information:
- Open claude.ai and sign in to your account.
- Click your initials or name in the lower-left corner and open Settings.
- Go to Billing. There you can see your plan, the date of the next charge, and the linked card.
You can’t change the billing date itself in settings. Anthropic offers a workaround: cancel your current subscription and sign up again on the date you want the billing cycle to start.
Card and billing-region requirements
There is only one payment method for web subscriptions.
For subscriptions purchased on our website, we only accept credit and debit cards.
Check our list of supported billing regions to make sure your billing address and the country where your payment method was issued are eligible.
Other reasons listed on the same page include a billing address that doesn’t match the bank’s records, an unsuccessful 3D Secure check, insufficient funds, and third-party payment services that Anthropic doesn’t accept.
Anthropic has a public list of countries where it sells access to Claude and its API.
| Country | Listed |
|---|---|
| Belarus | no |
| Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Serbia, Turkey | yes |
What happens to your account if renewal fails?
Key takeaway
If the renewal payment fails, Anthropic downgrades the account to the free plan. Conversations and projects remain in place, but paid features disappear: limits drop to the free tier, and Claude Code through the subscription stops working because it is not available at all on the free plan. The data remains; only paid access is disabled.
Anthropic directly identifies a failed payment as the reason for a downgrade.
Your payment method didn’t work, and your account was downgraded.
Here’s what that means, step by step:
- The charge for the new period fails.
- The account is moved to the free plan.
- Message limits drop to the free tier, and paid features are disabled.
- Work in the terminal through the subscription stops: Claude Code does not work on the free plan.
- Conversations, projects, and settings remain in the account; they are not deleted.
A separate note about the terminal. If you use Claude for work in Claude Code, a downgrade to the free plan stops work in the terminal, not just the web chat. I explained how many limits each plan provides and where to check what’s left in the article about tokens in Claude Pro and Max.
How do you cancel a Claude subscription to avoid another charge?
Key takeaway
Cancel the subscription where you signed up for it: cancel a web subscription in the website settings, and a subscription from the app in the app store. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period, and access remains until then. To avoid a charge for the next period, cancel at least 24 hours before the charge date. The website account only lets you cancel a subscription purchased on the website.
Anthropic states the platform rule this way.
You can cancel your Pro or Max subscription at any time on the platform where you signed up for it.
Steps for a web subscription purchased on the website:
- Sign in to your account at claude.ai.
- Click your initials or name in the lower-left corner and open Settings.
- Go to Billing and click Cancel.
If you signed up for the subscription in the phone app, cancel it in the app store: tap your initials in the upper-right corner, then Billing and Manage subscription. The website account can’t see that subscription, so people go there, don’t find a button, and conclude that cancellation is impossible.
There are two deadlines here, and both are easy to miss.
Cancellation will take effect at the end of the current billing period, and you can continue to use the paid plan until then.
Cancel in advance.
To avoid being charged for the next billing period, cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before the next charge date.
In other words, canceling doesn’t take away what you’ve already paid for: access lasts until the end of the period. But if you cancel less than 24 hours before the charge, you’ll be charged for the next period, and access will simply continue for another term.
Your account could be closed at any time, so it’s important that your work not depend on a single tool.
Can you get a refund for a Claude subscription?
Key takeaway
By default, Claude subscription payments are nonrefundable, except in cases specified in the terms or required by law. Buyers in the EU and UK have a 14-day refund window. Only Apple can issue refunds for subscriptions purchased through the App Store; Claude Support has no access to those charges. Also, a refund request does not cancel the subscription; you have to cancel it yourself.
Anthropic’s basic rule on refunds is as follows.
Except as expressly provided in our Consumer Terms of Service or required by law, all payments are non-refundable.
There are exceptions to this rule:
- Buyers in the EU and UK can request a refund within 14 days of purchase, minus the amount for what they have already used.
- A refund required by law in a particular country, if applicable there.
If you purchased the subscription through the App Store, refunds are handled under Apple’s rules.
Apple processed the payment, so only Apple can review the request and issue a refund. Our support team has no access to App Store charges and cannot refund them.
Refunds and cancellations are different actions, and people constantly confuse them.
A refund request does not cancel your subscription. To avoid future charges, you must also cancel it.
So while a refund request for a previous period is under review, the next period may still be charged if you don’t cancel the subscription separately. I wrote more about the specifics of paying and getting refunds through the app store in the article about paying for Claude through Apple ID.
What do “Request not allowed” access errors and blocks mean?
Key takeaway
“Request not allowed” with a 403 means the request was denied; the message alone does not establish a regional block. An unsupported region is one possible cause. A redirect to app-unavailable-in-region is more specific regional evidence; for other denials, retain the full message and use official access troubleshooting or support. The error does not itself establish that local project files were changed.
The most common terminal error looks like this: the request is sent, and a 403 comes back.
API Error: 403 {"error":{"type":"forbidden","message":"Request not allowed"}}
A common cause: if you are in a region where Anthropic services are restricted, your browser may correctly use a VPN, while the terminal and Claude desktop app do not inherit the system proxy settings, so the request goes out from your real address. You can check for a regional block with one command: a request to the Claude website without a proxy redirects to the app-unavailable-in-region page.
curl -I https://claude.ai
# 302 -> https://www.anthropic.com/app-unavailable-in-region
What should you do if Claude asks you to verify your identity?
Key takeaway
Since July 2026, Anthropic has begun selectively checking the identities of some users: a pop-up asks them to verify with an ID document and selfie through the Persona service. This has nothing to do with renewal, but access may be cut off regardless of whether the payment went through.
Anthropic describes the rollout of verification this way.
We are rolling out identity verification for some use cases, and you may see a verification prompt when accessing certain features.
Verification is conducted by the external service Persona: you scan an ID document and take a photo of yourself with the camera, and the result is sent back to Claude. Anthropic’s updated privacy policy, which authorizes this verification, takes effect on July 8, 2026.
Renewal methods and updating your card
Key takeaway
Since renewal is an automatic charge, everything comes down to one thing: keeping a card linked that will process the payment. The app store doesn’t solve this issue, and some plans cost more there. Besides subscriptions, there is pay-as-you-go token billing through the API and access to Claude models through third-party platforms—these are separate agreements with their own terms. Here are four paths, each with its own caveats.
First, the main point about the mechanism itself. You can update the card on your account in one place.
Go to Settings > Billing. Click the “Update” button next to your payment method. Enter your new card details. Click “Update” to save your changes.
The new card becomes the primary card, and all future renewals are charged to it. Next: where to get that card and what options are available.
| Option | How you pay | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Website subscription | Credit or debit card | Check the supported billing region |
| App Store subscription | In-app purchase | Some plans cost more |
| API access | Pay for token usage | Same list of countries, separate plan and billing |
| Through third-party platforms | Cloud services with access to Claude models | Different agreement and terms |
How I’d choose:
- If you specifically need the web chat or the subscription app, it comes down to having a working card. Subscriptions and token-based billing are different payment schemes; compare them for your usage volume.
- If it’s important to get started and the tool itself is secondary, see the overview of free models for coding. Some of them handle everyday tasks without a single payment.
- If you want to keep using Claude models but don’t want a subscription, pay-as-you-go API token billing is separate and often works out cheaper than a subscription at low usage volumes.
What are the most frequently asked questions about Claude renewal and billing?
Key takeaway
I’ve collected common search questions about Claude renewal and billing: where to find the renewal button, why you were charged twice, what to do if renewal failed, whether you’ll get a refund if you cancel, and whether the subscription covers terminal work. The answers here are brief, with links to a detailed explanation for each case.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the “renew” button in Claude?
There isn’t one. The subscription renews automatically at the end of the period as long as a working card is linked and the subscription hasn’t been canceled.
Why was I charged twice?
Most often, these are two separate subscriptions: one purchased on the website and the other in the app through the App Store. They are not linked, and each is charged automatically. Check both places: the Billing section on the website and subscriptions in your phone settings.
Renewal failed, and my account became free. What should I do?
This is the standard downgrade after a failed payment. Your data is still there. To restore the paid plan, you need a card that will process the charge.
Will I get a refund if I cancel?
By default, no: payments are nonrefundable except in cases covered by the terms or law. There is a 14-day window for the EU and UK. Cancellation simply stops future charges; access lasts until the end of the paid period.
Does a Claude subscription cover work in Claude Code?
Yes, Pro and Max provide the web version, the app, and terminal access, with shared limits. Claude Code does not work on the free plan, so the terminal stops after a downgrade.
Where should you start?
Key takeaway
The first step is to figure out what exactly is wrong: renewal failed, the account was downgraded, or access was blocked by region. That determines whether to fix the card, cancel an extra subscription, or move your work to another tool. Below is a short set of steps for each case.
Steps to take if you came here asking “how do I renew Claude?”:
- Open Settings > Billing and check what’s there: an active plan with a charge date, a downgrade to the free plan, or no access at all.
- If the plan is active, make sure a card that will process the renewal is linked.
- If the account was downgraded after a failed payment, the data is still there; the issue is once again having a working card.
- If Claude replies “Request not allowed” or access is blocked, diagnose access separately from billing. A redirect to
app-unavailable-in-regionpoints to a regional restriction; a generic 403 needs the exact message and official troubleshooting or support. Do not assume that either region or payment is the cause from that message alone. - If a prompt appears asking you to verify your identity, follow the guide to identity document verification.

Questions about Claude subscription renewal in 2026: timing, cancellation, and refund
Does Request not allowed prove that my renewal failed because of my region?
No. A generic 403 is an access denial, not a diagnosis of its cause. A redirect to app-unavailable-in-region is specific regional evidence; otherwise use the exact message and official access troubleshooting rather than treating payment or region as established.
What should I check first after losing subscription access?
Open Settings → Billing and distinguish an active plan, a scheduled cancellation and a downgrade after failed payment. Check the renewal date and payment status separately from network or account-access errors.
