Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 5.5 (batch)
Claude Sonnet 5.5 is designed for well-defined development, analysis and document preparation tasks. Emphasizes clear writing, visual presentation and sequential tool use.
About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
Everyday work with a clear task
Claude Sonnet 5.5 is intended for well-defined tasks: writing code, fixing bugs, analyzing information and preparing professional material. According to Anthropic, it is designed for fast iteration, where a result can be inspected, refined and work continued. Its presentation specifically highlights clear writing, careful document formatting and attention to interface design.
A task can combine reading material with producing final content. One described scenario is analyzing a company's quarterly material and a presentation transcript, then preparing slides in a specified design. The model can help with documents, spreadsheets and slides through provided tools; the application environment produces the finished file.
Visual material and continuing a task
The model accepts text and images, and produces its own response as text. It can connect visual information to a text prompt and support sustained multi-step work. Charts, tables and document pages supply analysis material; further file and interface actions require application tools.
The manufacturer's standard visual input formats are JPEG/PNG/GIF/WebP, using the first frame of an animation. For native analysis, the longer dimension is 2576 pixels, with 4784 visual tokens; larger images are downscaled before analysis. File and parameter support depends on the application's method.
The context window is 1 million tokens, and the maximum response in ordinary mode is 128 thousand tokens. The reliable built-in knowledge cutoff is June 2026. The manufacturer provides for changing effort and available tools during a conversation, as well as on-demand history compaction. These capabilities require environment support. If the application returns retained reasoning, Sonnet 5.5 reads its own blocks and those of Sonnet 5, Opus 4.8, Haiku 4.5 and earlier models; blocks from Opus 5, Opus 5.5, Fable and Mythos are incompatible with it. The ability to transfer its blocks to another model depends on the specific pairing and method support. Incompatible blocks are excluded, and subsequent turns proceed without the earlier reasoning. Changes to earlier messages, the system instruction or previous tool definitions can break block bindings and, when checked, cause the request to be rejected or affected blocks to be excluded.
Adaptive reasoning and work between tools
The standard mode is adaptive reasoning with effort set to high. Five effort levels are available: low, medium, high, xhigh and max. For a well-defined agentic task, Anthropic recommends starting at medium; for more difficult, sustained work, at high. The appropriate level depends on the task and required detail.
A separate between_tools mode removes preliminary reasoning before the first action and retains it between tool calls. It is supported only at low, medium and high. xhigh and max require adaptive mode. Fully disabling reasoning and a manual extended thinking budget are not supported for Sonnet 5.5.
Exact execution conditions
When the method supports tool control, automatic selection with auto and disabling tools with none are allowed. The manufacturer's model does not support forced options: requiring any tool with any or a specific named tool with tool. In between_tools mode, effort cannot be changed during a conversation; in ordinary adaptive mode, the manufacturer provides this setting. Working with tool results requires a consistent history to be retained.
In a method that supports these settings, non-default values of temperature, top_p and top_k are not accepted; the desired response format and style are specified through instructions.
In this version, the updated tokenizer retains the characteristics of the Sonnet 5 generation. Predicting request size requires consideration of the material's content, not just its character count. Ordinary development and research tasks are among the model's main uses, but some sensitive requests are restricted by safety mechanisms.
