ERNIE 4.5 VL 28B A3B

Baidu’s ERNIE 4.5 visual-language model connects text questions with image content and returns text. It uses a 28B/3B mixture of experts and supports thinking and non-thinking modes, with edition-specific model and hosted-service context limits.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

ERNIE-4.5-VL-28B-A3B is Baidu’s post-trained visual-language member of the ERNIE 4.5 family. Its foundations combine textual and visual pretraining with a heterogeneous mixture of experts. Modality-isolated routing and balanced training objectives support the interaction between language and vision while keeping their representations distinct. The resulting model accepts text and images and produces a text answer grounded in the supplied visual material. Baidu’s official model table also lists video alongside text and image inputs for this VL edition; its output remains text.

Its post-training emphasizes image understanding, task-specific adaptation and multimodal reasoning. The family uses supervised fine-tuning and preference-based optimization, while this VL edition also incorporates reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards. Thinking and non-thinking modes provide different ways to process the visual task. The mode belongs to the visual-language release and is not a substitution of the separately named text Thinking model.

The configuration has 28 billion total parameters and 3 billion activated for each token. It includes 28 layers, 20 query heads and four key/value heads. The text and vision expert configurations each list 64 experts with six selected, together with two shared experts. The published model configuration gives a 131,072-token context window. Baidu’s separately configured hosted listing describes 32K context for the same named VL line, so model configuration and hosted-service limits remain distinct numerical specifications.

For a document image, define the information to find: the relevant heading, a table entry, an explanation of a diagram or a comparison of visible sections. For an interface screenshot, state the user’s goal and ask for an explanation of the visible components or their relationship to the requirement. For a product photograph, request a description of the objects and features actually shown. If several images form one task, label their order and use the same criteria so that the response can compare them consistently.

For a visual-language task, pair the visual material with a concrete written objective. Choose the text artifact before the analysis: an explanation, a feature table, a description or a list of observations. Ask for the visible details that support each conclusion and distinguish them from interpretation. Where a small label or region matters, provide a readable source image and identify the area of interest. This connects the answer to the material that can be reviewed.

Baidu’s usage example combines text with an image and selects non-thinking mode in the processor. The producer distributes distinct execution-framework weight formats and releases the ERNIE 4.5 collection under Apache 2.0. The VL-28B-A3B identity preserves its visual-language purpose, modes and configuration separately from text-only ERNIE releases. A separate maximum output-token limit and a native video-duration limit are not established by the verified model card.

Practical task

Explain a transcribed inspection table

Technical example in English

Explain a transcribed inspection table

Analyze this text transcription of an inspection table: batch A, sealed 48, leaking 2; batch B, sealed 35, leaking 5. Calculate the leakage rate for each batch and write a short comparison for the warehouse manager. Treat the transcription as the complete input and identify which batch needs inspection first using only leakage rate.

Expected result

A two-row table with totals and leakage percentages, followed by a short prioritization explanation.

Check the result

Each percentage uses leaking divided by sealed plus leaking, and the priority follows that comparison.
