GPT-4o Search Preview is OpenAI’s text-in, text-out model specialized for web-backed answers. It searches before responding, combines an answer with source citations and supports a 128,000-token context and structured outputs.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

GPT-4o Search Preview is OpenAI’s specialized model for understanding and carrying out web-search queries in a conversational request. Its role is to connect a question with information retrieved from the web and produce a text answer. OpenAI introduced the search-tuned model as a distinct option, with the search workflow built into this model path rather than selected as an arbitrary external function.

The search takes place before the answer is generated. This makes the model useful for questions that depend on published information: product documentation, recent developments, public descriptions or comparisons of sources. Define the subject, period, location and selection criteria when they affect the question. An original application might ask for a research brief identifying the most relevant findings and differences between published reports.

The documented search response combines narrative text with citations. Source information is also represented by citation annotations containing the cited page’s title and address and the position of the reference in the answer. In an end-user application, the manufacturer requires citations to remain visible and clickable. This lets the reader inspect the page associated with a particular statement in the answer.

The model specification lists text input and text output, a context window of 128,000 tokens and up to 16,384 output tokens. Its documented knowledge cutoff is October 1, 2023; web retrieval supplies information beyond the model’s internal knowledge where the search finds it. Images, audio and video are not supported input modalities in this configuration. Streaming and Structured Outputs are listed as supported, while function calling, fine-tuning and predicted outputs are not.

This is a specialized Chat Completions search path. The manufacturer distinguishes it from its newer general-purpose search tool: the legacy model does not provide that tool’s domain filters, complete source-list controls, live-access switches or returned-token budget controls. Its search-before-answer behavior is also different from an optional tool invocation. These boundaries help define a focused search task without assigning unrelated tool capabilities to the Preview edition.

For a search assistant using Ailoot API, specify the question to answer and the desired artifact: an evidence-backed summary, a comparison table or an outline for a report. Ask it to distinguish facts found in sources from the conclusions you want drawn from them. Keep the question and desired artifact explicit so that the cited answer can be evaluated against the research goal.

Practical task

Research an official accessibility standard

Technical example in English

Research an official accessibility standard

Find the W3C WCAG 2.2 recommendation and prepare a short research brief about the Focus Not Obscured (Minimum) success criterion. State its number, level and practical purpose. Cite the official W3C source with a visible link, distinguish the criterion from your implementation advice and avoid adding an unsupported compliance claim.

Expected result

A short sourced brief with criterion number, level, practical explanation and a clickable official citation.

Check the result

Open the cited official page and check that the number, level and wording support the brief.
