GPT-5-Codex is OpenAI’s GPT-5 variant for agentic software engineering: implementing features, debugging, refactoring and reviewing code in a tool-enabled environment. It combines text and image input with adaptive reasoning and a 400,000-token context.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

GPT-5-Codex is OpenAI’s version of GPT-5 optimized for agentic software engineering in Codex and comparable coding environments. Its training targets work such as creating projects, implementing features and tests, debugging, refactoring established codebases and reviewing changes. Reinforcement learning on real coding tasks develops instruction following, code style and iterative verification. The intended setting is a coding assistant with access to project context and development tools.

The model adjusts how much reasoning it devotes to a task. A small, clearly defined change can be handled as an interactive exchange, while a complex refactor can involve sustained analysis and repeated implementation steps. This adaptive behavior connects conversation with execution: the agent examines the project, proposes a change, receives results from its environment and continues working toward the stated outcome.

Code review is a distinct part of its specialization. OpenAI describes a reviewer that examines the codebase and dependencies, relates a proposed change to its intended behavior, and uses code execution and tests to investigate correctness. The useful output is a focused explanation of consequential defects and the affected code, rather than comments based only on the appearance of a diff. Project files and tool results provide the evidence for that analysis.

Visual input supports frontend work. Screenshots, wireframes and diagrams can convey the desired interface or an observed problem. In an environment with browser and screenshot tools, the agent can inspect the implementation and compare what it built with the supplied visual target. These are environment-assisted workflows: the model interprets information and selects actions, while the application provides the tools and executes them.

The published model specification lists text and image input and text output, a 400,000-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens. It supports reasoning tokens, streaming, function calling and structured outputs. OpenAI documents the model through its Responses interface and identifies the unversioned name as an updating model label. Its documented knowledge cutoff is September 30, 2024. Audio and video are outside the listed input modalities; fine-tuning and predicted outputs are not supported in this configuration.

The system-card addendum separates model training from product controls. The model is trained to resist prompt-injection instructions encountered in coding material. Workspace isolation, network permissions and approval rules belong to the agent environment. This distinction matters when the assistant reads external documentation or executes commands: access is defined by the application, and its outputs provide the record of what actually happened.

For a coding assistant using Ailoot API, start with the behavior to achieve, the relevant files and a clear completion criterion. A suitable assignment might ask for a coordinated change, an explanation of affected dependencies and the checks needed to validate the result. Provide current project instructions and useful visual examples, then request an outcome that can be reviewed: changed code, a defect analysis or a tested implementation plan.

Practical task

Review a mutable default argument

Technical example in English

Review a mutable default argument

Review this Python function: def add_tag(tag, tags=[]):
    tags.append(tag)
    return tags
Calling add_tag("red") and then add_tag("blue") should return separate one-item lists when no list is supplied. Explain the defect, give a minimal correction and tests for independent calls and an explicitly provided list.

Expected result

A defect explanation, corrected function and tests covering default and explicit arguments.

Check the result

Check that omitted lists do not share state while a caller-supplied list retains the intended append behavior.
