Microsoft AI: MAI-Voice-2.1
Microsoft AI’s MAI-Voice-2.1 generates expressive multilingual speech for narration, audiobooks, educational content and voice-over. Its 23-language profile supports consistent speaker identity, multiple speakers and controlled delivery.
About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
MAI-Voice-2.1 is Microsoft AI’s prompted text-to-speech model for work where expressive delivery and audio fidelity matter. Its model card covers twenty-three languages and twenty-six locales, with natural intonation, rhythm and emotional nuance. The manufacturer identifies audiobooks, media narration, content creation and voice-over as core uses. This edition emphasises longer expressive content; MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash is the separate choice designed around latency-sensitive interaction.
Narration with a consistent speaker
The model card documents one voice identity rendered consistently across the supported languages. Long-form generation uses chunking and context carryover to improve continuity between passages. That is useful for a lesson, an audiobook chapter or a sequence of related voice-over sections which should retain the narrator’s character. Prepare coherent passages with clear boundaries and preserve the same speaker choice through the piece.
The input is the final transcript, with an optional speaker reference and SSML expressive controls. A narration brief should distinguish what the listener hears from production notes. For a technical explainer, write a clear introduction, then the actual steps and the closing instruction. Keep product names and repeated terms in a consistent written form. For localised narration, prepare the target-language script; the selected language and voice govern its spoken rendering.
Speakers, roles and expressive control
Microsoft provides a curated voice library and documents multiple speakers for dialogue. Harper and Grant illustrate speaker identities with entries for several locales. A two-person educational exchange can assign the question and explanation to distinct voices, retaining the same assignment when a role returns. Label the spoken lines clearly so the desired conversation is represented in the synthesis input.
Tone and delivery can be shaped at the turn or sentence level through SSML. Styles are speaker-specific: the managed catalogue lists task-oriented narrator or educational styles for suitable voices and emotional choices such as joyful or relieved for others. The US Harper entry supports those two emotional styles. Select the speaker and its documented delivery style together rather than transferring a style from another voice.
For a story or presentation, expressiveness can distinguish a factual explanation, a reflective passage and a lively quotation. A practical line is: “The first attempt gave us an incomplete picture. Looking at the whole sequence made the missing step clear.” Decide where the meaning changes and prepare the spoken units accordingly. Listen to the transitions so the delivery follows the narrative instead of making every sentence equally emphatic.
Reference voice and audio result
The optional custom-voice mode matches a consented speaker from a five- to sixty-second audio reference without fine-tuning. Microsoft recommends natural conversational delivery and moderate energy in that reference, since the sample affects the generated voice. Its custom-voice workflow requires manufacturer approval and a recorded consent statement. The prebuilt library is a separate voice-selection path.
The manufacturer allows a chosen output format, and its published synthesis example saves mono MP3 at 24 kHz and 160 kbit/s. These settings describe one output workflow. Select the audio representation for the next editing or playback stage, and keep the script, speaker and section order associated with the recording. A finished chapter or lesson may contain several generated passages while remaining one coherent listening experience.
Use the long-form result
MAI-Voice-2.1 is oriented towards naturalness and expression when immediate response time is less important than the spoken performance. For an extended piece, review recurring names, section boundaries, the voices assigned to dialogue and changes in emotional register. The documentation establishes long-form capability and consistency mechanisms without specifying an unlimited script or a guaranteed maximum recording duration. The practical deliverable is expressive audio whose narrator, wording and progression match the prepared material.
