Mistral AI’s general-purpose Small family supports assistants, document analysis and coding workflows with tool calls and structured responses. Its Small 4 edition combines direct answers and adjustable reasoning with text-and-image input.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Mistral Small is Mistral AI’s general-purpose family for instruction-following, document work and coding assistants. Its published editions have distinct architectures and context limits. Small 4 combines instruction-following, reasoning and agentic coding in one multimodal model. It accepts text and images and produces text, allowing the same task to include a written requirement and visual evidence such as a document page or interface screenshot.

Small 4 uses a mixture-of-experts architecture with 119 billion total parameters and 128 experts, of which four are selected per token. Its context window is 256K tokens. The preceding Small 3.2 edition has a 128K context window. These are version-specific properties: a family selection follows an updated edition, while a fixed model name identifies a particular release.

Small 4 provides two reasoning-effort settings. The direct-response setting uses minimal thinking and returns the answer without a separate reasoning segment. The high-effort setting adds more detailed reasoning before the final answer and is intended for harder problems. This unifies everyday chat with mathematical analysis, research and code tasks. In a reasoning conversation, retaining the complete previous assistant message preserves the context needed for subsequent turns.

The model’s application features include function calling, structured output, document questions and controlled continuation of an answer. Function calling begins with descriptions of the available tools and their expected arguments. The model can choose an appropriate function, identify missing information and generate its arguments; the application executes the function and returns the result for the next answer. The tool workflow can allow automatic selection, require a tool, disable tool use or permit several calls in parallel. These controls belong to the surrounding application workflow.

Structured output supports both JSON and a custom schema. JSON-oriented tasks should explicitly describe the expected format, while a schema defines the fields and types required by downstream processing. Document question answering combines extraction of text and layout with language-model analysis: ask for a specific condition, compare sections or collect a defined set of fields. Predicted-output support is useful when revising text or code with much of the result already known. Prefix continuation supplies a chosen opening for an answer; batch processing handles collections of independent requests asynchronously.

For an Ailoot API assistant, define one useful deliverable and the material that supports it. A support task can combine an inquiry and a screenshot to produce a response with extracted observations. A document task can return a field table and unresolved questions. A coding task can explore the relevant files, propose coordinated edits and use the application’s checks to refine them. Small 4 is released with Apache 2.0 weights for customization; the family name preserves the general model choice, with concrete modes and limits attached to the selected edition.

Practical task

Extract a service-level obligation

Technical example in English

Extract a service-level obligation

Read this clause: “Priority incidents receive an initial reply within two business hours. Resolution targets are agreed per incident. The customer must provide a contact number.” Prepare a field table for response target, resolution target and customer obligation. Preserve the difference between initial reply and resolution and mark anything not specified.

Expected result

A three-row obligation table with source wording and an explicit unresolved resolution target.

Check the result

Check that the two-hour target applies only to the initial reply, not incident resolution.
