Mistral: Mistral Nemo
Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 is a 12B multilingual text model for precise instructions, multi-turn conversation and code. It has a 128k maker context, a Tekken tokenizer, documented function calling and a distinct instruction-tuned checkpoint with its own sampling guidance.

About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 is the instruction-tuned edition of the 12B Mistral Nemo language model. It is fine-tuned from the separately named Nemo Base 2407 checkpoint. The maker describes training with a large proportion of multilingual and code material and a context window of 128k tokens, supporting written instructions, conversation and programming tasks.
Key features and architecture
The release provides distinct pretrained and instruction-tuned versions. This entry concerns the Instruct checkpoint: a text request can ask for an explanation, a revised document, program code or a proposed function call. Its instruction-tuning is described as improving precise instruction following, reasoning, multi-turn dialogue and code generation compared with the preceding Mistral 7B line.
The model has 40 Transformer layers with a model width of 5,120. It uses SwiGLU, 32 attention heads and 8 key/value heads in grouped-query attention, a head dimension of 128 and a hidden dimension of 14,336. Rotary embeddings use a theta setting of one million. The released vocabulary has 2 to the power of 17 entries, or 131,072; that vocabulary size is distinct from the 128k task-context label.
The maker's announcement also describes quantization-aware training and FP8 inference. These are release and precision characteristics, not additional content modalities. Preserve the exact checkpoint and matching tokenizer rather than treating another 12B or Mistral-family model as the same edition.
Multilingual text and Tekken
The release emphasizes English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Hindi, while Russian is included in the model card's language metadata. Set the final language, intended audience and terminology before asking for a result. For a multilingual document task, keep names, identifiers and units unchanged while adapting the surrounding prose.
Nemo uses the Tekken tokenizer, trained on more than 100 languages and designed to represent natural language and source code efficiently. The tokenizer affects how the source material occupies context; a character count is therefore not itself a token count. Use the matching tokenizer and keep the task's relevant material together rather than estimating the context from the visible length of a passage alone.
Instruction and code preparation
For a document explanation, provide the source passage and identify the condition or term to explain. Request the explanation in the reader's language while retaining the original names and the source statement supporting the answer. For editing, specify which meaning and conditions must survive the rewrite and whether the result should be the revised passage alone or a passage plus an explanation.
For a coding task, name the language, input types, expected output and existing interface. Include the function or declarations that determine the change. A useful result can contain the implementation, its assumptions and example inputs with expected outputs. A separate question can ask the model to trace one input through the supplied code so the explanation relates to a concrete path rather than an unspecified program.
For a multi-turn conversation, keep the relevant earlier response and ask a focused follow-up or supply new material that changes the task. Define whether the next answer should revise the earlier artifact, explain one decision or produce a different representation of the same source facts. This makes the conversation's continuation explicit.
Function calling and sampling
The maker documents function calling using the matching conversation format. The model generates the proposed operation and arguments, while the application executes the function and adds its result to the conversation before the next generation. The card explicitly notes that a shortened code example does not show the complete cycle, so the missing execution and result steps remain necessary parts of a tool-assisted application.
In that published tool format, call IDs and corresponding result IDs are exactly nine alphanumeric characters. Keep the association between the operation and its result when preparing the native-format conversation. A wrapper interface may represent the conversation differently; the release's requirement describes the maker's model formatting rather than an invented universal client identifier.
The maker recommends a temperature of 0.3, noting that Nemo uses smaller temperatures than earlier Mistral models. The various 64-, 128-, 256- and 1,000-token settings shown in examples are generation choices for those demonstrations, not independently published maximum answer capacities.
Substantive limits
The Instruct card describes this checkpoint as a demonstration of fine-tuning the base and explicitly states that it contains no moderation mechanism. Applications needing moderated behavior must supply that behavior in the surrounding system. This is a property of the released checkpoint rather than a claim about every service hosting a Nemo model.
Nemo's documented task here is text generation, with its own 128k context and conversation format. Image understanding, speech transcription and hybrid reasoning controls from later Mistral families should not be assigned to this edition. Provide the complete written condition, relevant source material and required final artifact so that the result remains usable as an explanation, revised text or proposed implementation.
Practical task
Trace and repair a loop boundary
Technical example in English
Trace and repair a loop boundary
Trace this Python function for n=3, then correct it to sum integers from 1 through n inclusively: def total(n): return sum(range(1, n)). Inputs are nonnegative integers. Preserve the total(n) interface. Return the corrected function and examples for n=0, n=1 and n=3, with expected outputs.Expected result
A concise trace, a corrected function and three input/output examples.Check the result
Check that n=0 remains zero and that the upper endpoint n is included for positive inputs.Ailoot Ultra · OpenAI Chat POST /v1/chat/completions mistralai/mistral-nemo
