About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
Mixtral 8x22B Instruct v0.1 is Mistral AI's instruction-tuned version of the separately named Mixtral 8x22B v0.1 base model. It receives a text conversation and produces text, including explanations, code and proposed function calls. The family release highlights English, French, Italian, German and Spanish together with mathematical and coding capabilities.
Sparse experts and context
The maker describes a sparse mixture-of-experts model with 141 billion total parameters and 39 billion active parameters. The released Instruct configuration contains 8 experts with 2 selected per token, 56 layers, 48 query attention heads and 8 key/value heads. The total parameter count and selected experts describe the model's structure rather than the length of a response.
The family release documents a 64K context, and the exact Instruct configuration sets maximum positions to 65,536. Use that space to retain the source passages, conversation and requested answer together. A large-document question can ask for one condition across several sections while returning a concise table with each source location. Include the material that determines the result rather than filling the window with unrelated content.
Encoding the instruction conversation
The model card begins with the maker's v3 instruction tokenizer and then shows how to format messages with the matching chat template. Its released vocabulary has 32,768 entries. The native tokenizer and a compatible tokenizer should produce matching message representations; the card explicitly discusses comparing their encodings. This is different from assuming that the Tekken format used by later Mistral models is interchangeable with this release.
For a conversation, distinguish the user question, previous assistant answer and any tool result. Keep the relevant earlier answer when asking a follow-up. A task can first ask for an explanation of a source passage and then request a more specific comparison, while preserving the source content and the purpose of the discussion.
For multilingual editing, identify the source language, final language and terminology that must remain unchanged. Ask for a revised passage that retains names, conditions and units. For a mathematical problem, define the variables and assumptions and specify whether the final result should be an exact expression, numerical approximation or proof. For coding, include the function signature, relevant declarations and expected behavior before asking for an implementation or explanation.
Function calls and their results
The card documents native function calling with tool descriptions and parameter schemas. The application supplies the operations, the model prepares the chosen function's arguments, and the application executes it. The returned result must then be added to the conversation so that the model can use it in the next answer. The card warns that one shortened code example does not demonstrate this complete cycle.
A lookup task should identify what information is missing and which supplied function can return it. Include the required values or ask for the missing information before the application executes the operation. Keep the proposed call separate from the actual returned data; the final explanation can then refer to the result that was obtained rather than a result inferred from the tool's name.
In the maker's native conversation format, tool calls and corresponding results use IDs of exactly nine alphanumeric characters. The tokenizer also contains special markers for available tools, tool calls and tool results. Preserve the matching representation when preparing the native-format conversation; a wrapper's visible representation is a separate interface choice.
Practical coding and document artifacts
For a coding correction, supply the affected function, an input that exposes the issue and the expected result. Request the revised fragment, the cause of the discrepancy and example inputs that distinguish the intended behavior. Generating code is a text artifact; compiling it, running it or applying it to a repository requires the connected development environment.
For a document explanation, ask for the statement that answers the question and the section supporting it. A comparison can separate shared conditions, differences and unresolved details. For a constrained text record, define the field names and treatment of missing values. The original family announcement describes function calling together with constrained output in the maker's connected service; those formatting facilities remain distinct from executing an external operation.
Edition and generation limits
The card shows generation budgets such as 64 and 1,000 tokens for particular examples. They are demonstration settings, not independent maximum answer capacities. Keep the prompt and desired answer within the actual configured context and request the length appropriate to the task.
This entry is the text-based Instruct v0.1 checkpoint with its v3 instruction formatting. Vision, speech and hybrid reasoning controls introduced in later Mistral families should not be assigned to it. Preserve the exact edition and source material when preparing the explanation, code proposal or tool-assisted answer the next step needs.
Practical task
Repair integer average division
Technical example in English
Repair integer average division
Fix this Python function for nonempty numeric lists: def average(values): return sum(values) // len(values). Input [1, 2] must produce 1.5. Return the corrected function and assertions for [1, 2] and [2, 4]. State the nonempty-input assumption rather than inventing an empty-list policy.Expected result
A focused function correction, two assertions and the retained input assumption.Check the result
The function must preserve a fractional average and leave the unspecified empty-list behavior undecided.Ailoot Ultra · OpenAI Chat POST /v1/chat/completions mistralai/mixtral-8x22b-instruct
