Kimi Dev 72B

Kimi-Dev-72B is Moonshot AI’s coding model for resolving software issues. Its design pairs bug fixing with regression-test writing: locate the relevant files, propose a patch and produce a test that demonstrates the original failure.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Kimi-Dev-72B is Moonshot AI’s coding language model for software-engineering tasks, with a particular focus on resolving issues in existing repositories. It accepts text and produces text, including code proposals, explanations and tests. Its design starts from the Qwen 2.5 72B base model and develops the abilities needed to turn a bug report into a reviewable change.

BugFixer and TestWriter. The manufacturer treats fixing an implementation and writing the test that reproduces its defect as complementary skills. Both use the same two-stage structure: identify the file that needs attention, then make the relevant code edit. A useful repair test fails when the bug is present and passes when the intended correction is applied. This gives the model a practical focus on the relationship between the report, the implementation and executable evidence.

Mid-training. The team reports roughly 150 billion tokens of additional training from high-quality, real-world material, including millions of issues and pull-request commits. This stage teaches patterns in how developers investigate a report, edit code and write unit tests. The team also excludes SWE-bench Verified repositories from this training collection to reduce contamination.

Reinforcement learning. After supervised fine-tuning, the reinforcement-learning stage focuses on code changes. Its reward uses the final execution outcome in a containerised repository; the producer describes success in terms of the complete test suite passing. The training process filters out tasks on which multiple sampled attempts all fail, gradually introduces harder prompts and reuses recent successful examples to reinforce effective repair patterns.

Prepare a real issue. Supply the expected behaviour, the observed result and a minimal reproduction, then include the relevant source files, error output and existing tests. Keep file paths and function names unchanged. Ask the model to identify the likely file and explain how the failure follows from the supplied implementation before presenting a patch. The resulting artifact should state which code changes, why the change addresses the report and which existing behaviour it must preserve.

Prepare the regression test. Give the project’s current test conventions and representative fixtures. Request a test that triggers the original failure, together with the assertion that distinguishes correct from incorrect behaviour. For an edge-case report, name the boundary condition rather than asking for generic extra coverage. A useful answer can contain both a minimal edit and a targeted test, allowing the reviewer to compare the proposed repair with the issue directly.

Test-time self-play. Moonshot’s research workflow also lets bug-fixing and test-writing proposals check one another. This is an evaluation and orchestration technique around the model: a test candidate can challenge a patch, and a patch can be checked against the test. In an application, the same idea can guide a review request that asks for a counterexample to a proposed correction before accepting the final edit.

The text response is a proposal until it is applied and exercised in the actual repository. File access, edits, container execution and test results come from the surrounding development environment. Include the outputs of those checks in a follow-up request so the model can reason about the observed failure rather than an imagined run. Preserve project constraints and ask for the smallest justified change when the issue touches a mature codebase.

Practical task

Fix a mutable default argument

Technical example in English

Fix a mutable default argument

Issue in utils.py: def add_tag(tag, tags=[]): tags.append(tag); return tags. Separate calls unexpectedly share prior tags. Expected behavior: omitted tags starts a fresh list; an explicitly supplied list is still updated. Propose the smallest patch and a regression test using standard unittest that fails on the original. Keep the function name and argument order.

Expected result

A focused utils.py patch and unittest cases covering independent defaults and explicit-list mutation.

Check the result

Check the regression makes two independent calls and detects leakage between them.
