MoonshotAI: Kimi K2.6

Kimi K2.6 is Moonshot AI’s multimodal agent model for long-horizon coding, visual interface work and tool-guided tasks. It combines text, images and video with thinking or instant responses, and documents optional preservation of reasoning across turns in a 256K context.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Kimi K2.6 is Moonshot AI’s native multimodal agent model for long-horizon coding, coding-driven design and coordinated task execution. It accepts text, images and video and generates text, including explanations, code and proposed tool calls. Its mixture-of-experts profile lists one trillion total parameters, 32 billion active parameters and a 256K context, with a MoonViT visual encoder.

Coding and visual design

The producer develops K2.6 for end-to-end coding across languages and domains, including repository work, frontend interfaces and performance optimisation. Supply the relevant code, expected behaviour, the observed failure and the conditions the change must preserve. For a visual task, combine the requirements with a readable mockup or screenshot and identify whether it shows the current state or the desired result.

An illustrative instruction is: “Implement this interface from the supplied visual specification, preserve the field names and explain the behaviour of each required state.” The expected deliverable is code and its supporting explanation, followed by the actual rendered or validation observation from the application. Generated interfaces and text proposals are not independently executed actions.

Thinking, instant and preserved reasoning

K2.6 supports thinking and instant modes. Thinking develops intermediate reasoning before the final answer; instant mode produces a direct response. The producer’s deployment recommendations use temperature 1.0 for thinking, 0.6 for instant and top-p 0.95. These are recommendations for its documented reference, separate from choosing the final answer’s style or length.

A specific K2.6 feature is preserve-thinking, which keeps full reasoning content across multi-turn interaction. It is disabled by default and is documented for thinking-mode coding agents. When using it, retained analysis consumes context along with tool observations and final replies. Keep the task’s accepted requirements clear so an earlier tentative thought does not become an unsupported fact in the final artifact.

Multimodal inputs

The exact card demonstrates image and video inputs. Label multiple media items, preserve visible text and state the detail or event you want explained. For a chart, request the observed values separately from interpretation. For video, identify the relevant segment and the temporal change to analyse. The maker marks the demonstrated video workflow as experimental in its reference; image-and-video understanding produces text rather than generated media.

Tools and orchestration

K2.6 interleaves thinking with multi-step tool calls and documents a producer agent-swarm approach that decomposes a task into coordinated, specialised branches. The application supplies tools, performs selected operations and returns their observations. Define the allowed actions and the final artifact before an agent task starts, such as a completed source comparison, a repository patch or a prepared document.

Keep each returned observation associated with the operation and source that produced it. A branch or proposed tool action becomes useful evidence only when its result is available to the continuing task. The named modes and producer orchestration demonstrations do not imply that an ordinary text response independently performs every background or cross-application action.

Context and edition scope

K2.6 adopts the producer’s native INT4 quantization method from K2 Thinking. That is a documented checkpoint property, distinct from a promise about any surrounding execution configuration. Its 256K context must accommodate the source, conversation, optional retained reasoning and requested output together. The model card’s evaluation budgets are not universal answer limits.

Review code against the requirements, visual findings against the input and source-sensitive claims against authoritative material. Retain K2.6 separately from K2.5 and the text-only K2 editions, particularly when preserve-thinking and visual workflow details matter to the task.

Practical task

Design a bounded table-sort function

Technical example in English

Design a bounded table-sort function

Implement a JavaScript function sortRows(rows, direction) for objects with a numeric score field. Return a new array, preserve input order for equal scores and support only asc or desc; reject other directions. Include examples with tied scores and tests proving the original array is unchanged. Explain how the tie rule is preserved.

Expected result

Function code, tie-order examples and tests for both directions, invalid direction and input preservation.

Check the result

Check that reversing an ascending result does not accidentally reverse equal-score rows.
