About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
Hermes 3 Llama 3.1 70B is Nous Research’s 70B generalist language-model edition in the Hermes 3 series. It accepts text and generates a response, written passage, code, structured record or proposed tool call. The maker emphasises user steerability, reasoning, roleplay, multi-turn dialogue and long-context coherence, alongside improved function calling and code generation.
Steer the task and response
A system instruction can define the role, rules, style and output requirements. For roleplay, give the setting, viewpoint and character boundaries; for an analytical assignment, supply the source passages and criteria for the conclusion. A useful brief is: “Explain the differences between these requirements, preserve the technical names and identify the passage supporting each finding.”
For coding, provide the relevant implementation, observed failure, expected behaviour and the interfaces that must remain stable. Request the proposed code artifact and its explanation, then use actual validation observations when a revision is needed. The model’s steering direction helps shape the response, but the brief still has to define the useful outcome.
ChatML conversation
Hermes 3 uses ChatML with separate system, user and assistant turns and explicit boundaries. The producer recommends formatting the conversation through the model’s own template and adding the assistant-generation prompt. A system message is optional; when used, it should describe the task context and desired behaviour rather than replacing the user’s actual request.
Keep dialogue history in the correct roles. For a continuing writing task, preserve established facts and tell the model which passage may change. For source work, identify material as evidence and separate it from instructions. This helps a later response retain the task’s constraints without confusing quoted text with a new command.
Function calling
The exact card trains function use with a specific system representation, function signatures and parameter schemas. The model returns JSON objects containing the selected function name and arguments inside tool-call tags. The surrounding application parses that proposal, performs the function and returns a named tool response. The model then uses the returned data to produce the answer.
Define functions precisely and require real values for arguments instead of assumptions about an external system. A lookup function can supply a missing product field or calculation, while the answer explains what the returned information means. A generated call is distinct from an executed result; retain the observation with the task.
JSON mode and limits
Hermes 3 also documents a schema-conditioned system instruction for JSON-only responses. Define fields and types, and explain how to represent missing source information. Check the generated object both for its structure and its agreement with the input. A schema-compatible response should not be treated as proof that a value was retrieved or verified.
The published 70B model configuration has 131,072 positions. Source text, conversation and generated content share the selected workflow’s context, and the example generation size is not a universal hard answer limit. Reserve room for the result and keep long inputs relevant to the question.
The useful deliverable is a reviewable text, code proposal or structured record grounded in the supplied context and actual tool observations. This exact 70B Hermes 3 edition remains separate from the larger 405B model and Hermes 4’s hybrid reasoning format and controls.
Practical task
Continue a constrained roleplay
Technical example in English
Continue a constrained roleplay
Play Irena, the archivist who knows a bridge is unsafe but fears closing it will isolate the town. I play the mayor. Begin with two or three lines of dialogue that reveal the conflict through subtext. Keep Irena’s knowledge consistent and stop before choosing the mayor’s answer or actions.Expected result
Two or three in-character lines, with optional short stage direction and room for the mayor’s response.Check the result
Check that the safety-versus-isolation conflict is present and that the user’s character remains under user control.Ailoot Ultra · OpenAI Chat POST /v1/chat/completions nousresearch/hermes-3-llama-3.1-70b
