Nous: Hermes 4 405B

Hermes 4 405B is Nous Research’s hybrid reasoning text model based on Llama 3.1 405B. It combines steerable chat, explicit thinking, schema-trained JSON and interleaved function calls for mathematics, coding, analytical work and controlled creative writing.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Hermes 4 405B is Nous Research’s hybrid-mode reasoning model based on Llama 3.1 405B. It accepts text and produces text, including a final response, code, structured JSON or tool-call content. The producer develops the edition around verified reasoning traces, strong user steerability and format-faithful output, while retaining general assistant and creative-writing tasks.

What changes from Hermes 3

The manufacturer describes an expanded post-training corpus of approximately five million samples and sixty billion tokens, blending reasoning and non-reasoning data. Hermes 4 adds an explicit hybrid reasoning mode, improves the target behaviour for mathematics, code, STEM and logic, and is trained to follow JSON schemas and repair malformed objects. These are edition changes; Hermes 3’s prompt representation and earlier behaviour should not be substituted for them.

For a reasoning assignment, provide the complete problem, definitions and constraints. Ask for the final solution or code artifact separately from the intermediate analysis. A practical brief is: “Compare these conditions with the proposed solution, identify the unsupported step and return a corrected conclusion with the assumptions it uses.”

Prompt format and thinking

Hermes 4 uses the Llama 3 chat format with role headers. The producer can activate reasoning through the thinking flag in the chat template or a system instruction defining that behaviour. When the model deliberates, thinking is enclosed in its dedicated markers before the final response. Additional system instructions can shape the role, style and answer format.

The reference also offers keep_cots to retain thinking content. This is a template option, not an assertion of unlimited memory. Keep accepted facts and task requirements clear so intermediate ideas remain distinguishable from final findings. For writing, specify viewpoint, tone and the material that must remain; for extraction, define the record you want rather than relying on an open-ended assistant style.

Tools and structured outputs

Hermes 4 supports function calls interleaved with reasoning in an assistant turn. Tools have names, descriptions and parameter schemas, supplied through the maker’s system representation or the tools field interpreted by the template. The model emits tagged JSON call objects. The application parses and executes the selected function and returns a tool response, after which the model can continue analysis and give the answer.

For a JSON result, provide the schema and the meaning of each field. Training for schema adherence or malformed-object repair does not establish that every returned value is factual. Compare the object with the source, retain evidence for extracted fields and validate proposed function arguments before applying them.

Context and generation guidance

The published model configuration sets max_position_embeddings to 131,072. Budget the source material, conversation, reasoning, tool results and response within the selected workflow’s context; this position field is not an independent hard output limit. Nous recommends temperature 0.6, top-p 0.95 and top-k 20 for its reference sampling profile.

A useful result is a source-backed answer, code proposal, structured record or written passage whose constraints can be checked. Review generated code in its intended application and use actual returned observations for any follow-up. Keep the exact 405B Hermes 4 edition, its Llama chat format and hybrid-tool workflow distinct from smaller variants, Hermes 3 ChatML and other Llama-derived models.

Practical task

Repair an extracted record

Technical example in English

Repair an extracted record

Repair this draft record using only the source sentence. Source: 'Shipment R18 contains 14 blue lamps; delivery date is not yet agreed.' Draft: {shipment: 'R18', quantity: '41', colour: 'blue', delivery_date: 'Friday'}. Return valid JSON with shipment, quantity, colour and delivery_date; quantity must be an integer and an unknown date must be null. Briefly list the corrected fields afterward.

Expected result

A requested JSON object with corrected quantity and unknown date, followed by a brief correction list.

Check the result

Parsing succeeds and no field contradicts the source; quantity is 14 and delivery_date is null.
