About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
Nemotron 3.5 Lightning is NVIDIA’s hybrid mixture-of-experts language model for reasoning and direct-response text tasks. The producer profile lists 30 billion total parameters and 3 billion active parameters, combining Mamba and transformer components with multi-token prediction. The referenced BF16 release is the producer’s full-precision model material, separate from its optimised low-precision editions.
Training and edition design
The manufacturer describes pretraining on more than twenty trillion tokens, followed by continued training for multi-token prediction, supervised fine-tuning and multi-environment reinforcement learning. The instruction and reinforcement-learning tasks include code, mathematics, science, tool calling, structured output and multi-turn interaction. Multi-token prediction is an architecture and training feature of Lightning, not an extra output type such as image or audio generation.
The model accepts text and returns text. Its maker-supported languages include English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Japanese. Specify the output language and preserve technical names or code identifiers that should not change.
Reasoning or direct response
The producer chat template can enable or disable thinking. A reasoning task develops intermediate analysis before the final response, while a direct task can request the answer without that trace. The maker recommends temperature 1.0 and top-p 0.95 for its reference profile. State the required final artifact independently: a solution, a focused code change, a source comparison or a defined data record.
A practical brief is: “Use these source passages to compare the requirements and identify the condition each conclusion depends on.” For coding, provide the relevant implementation, observed failure and expected behaviour, and request a patch tied to the evidence. Keep proposed code distinct from an actual validation result.
Tools and structured work
NVIDIA’s post-training covers multi-step tools and structured outputs. Supply functions with precise purposes and argument schemas when an application uses the model as an agent. The application executes selected operations and returns observations for the next step. A chosen function or generated argument record does not independently carry out the operation.
For a structured result, define field meanings and missing-value conventions. Check values against the input even when the format is suitable for a downstream system. A continuing task should retain the observations that establish progress and the final criterion that marks it complete.
Context and producer configuration
The model supports context up to one million tokens in the documented profile. The maker also demonstrates a smaller 256K configuration for a memory-constrained execution setup, so the maximum profile and a selected configuration are different. Source material, history, tool returns, reasoning and the final response share the available context. The card’s output-context wording does not establish an additional independent one-million-token answer budget.
The BF16 reference, low-precision producer releases and the earlier Nemotron 3 Nano have separate edition properties. Use authoritative text for source-sensitive claims and actual application observations for executed work. The useful result is a reviewable textual solution, code proposal or structured analysis whose assumptions and supporting evidence remain clear.
Practical task
Calculate usable production time
Technical example in English
Calculate usable production time
A machine produces 360 parts per hour while running. A shift has 90 minutes available, including 15 minutes of setup during which no parts are produced. Assume a constant rate and no other losses. Calculate the production quantity, show the unit conversion and state how many minutes are actually productive.Expected result
A productive-time calculation, a rate conversion and a final quantity with units.Check the result
Check that setup is subtracted before multiplying and that hours and minutes are not mixed in one rate calculation.Ailoot Ultra · OpenAI Chat POST /v1/chat/completions nvidia/nemotron-3.5-lightning
