OpenAI: GPT-4o (2024-05-13)

The separately named May 13 GPT-4o API snapshot works with text and images and returns text. Use a visual or writing brief to develop an explanation, edited passage or response based on supplied material.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

GPT-4o (2024-05-13) is the separately named May 13 snapshot of OpenAI’s GPT-4o family. Its API role combines text and image input with text output. The dated edition remains distinct from the later August 6 and November 20 snapshots and from audio-specific or moving chat selections.

A practical application is explaining a visual example in the context of a written question. Provide the screenshot, photograph, document image or diagram and identify the detail that matters. An illustrative support request combines a screenshot with a description of the user’s difficulty, then asks for the relevant observation, missing information and a proposed reply. Add the context the image cannot establish by itself.

For writing, supply the original material, intended audience and purpose of the result. You can request an explanation, edited passage, instruction or comparison tied to the provided facts. Identify the terms and statements that must survive a rewrite. In a follow-up, name the section to change and explain whether the issue is tone, length, an omitted condition or an unclear relationship.

OpenAI’s GPT-4o family documentation lists a 128,000-token context window. Source material, conversation and the generated answer share the available window. Keep the useful earlier facts and leave room for the response. A long input works best with a defined question and source priorities, rather than an instruction to treat every passage as equally relevant.

For a machine-readable result, OpenAI’s JSON-mode documentation includes GPT-4o model names. JSON mode targets valid JSON; the application still checks the required fields and their meaning. Schema-based response formatting is documented for the August 6 snapshot and newer editions; the May 13 workflow uses the older JSON-mode distinction. A function request, when used in a producer-supported tool workflow, is separate from the final text and from an operation actually executed by the application.

Prepare visual material with readable labels and enough surrounding context to interpret them. Define how missing information should appear in the result and what would complete the task. A useful artifact is a specific explanation, revised document or proposed response whose important statements can be compared with the original material. A focused follow-up can then resolve an open question or refine one part of the same result.

Practical task

Clarify an account-change instruction

Technical example in English

Clarify an account-change instruction

Rewrite this instruction as a clear numbered procedure: 'To change the billing email, open Settings, choose Billing, edit Billing contact, then save. Changing the sign-in email does not change the billing email. Only owners can save billing changes.' Preserve the permission condition and the distinction between the two email fields. Add no interface controls beyond those named.

Expected result

A short numbered procedure with the owner permission and email-field distinction clearly stated.

Check the result

Every named control comes from the source and the result does not equate billing and sign-in email.
