About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
GPT-4o (2024-08-06) is OpenAI’s dated August 6 GPT-4o snapshot. It accepts text and images and produces text. OpenAI names this exact edition in the launch of Structured Outputs, which lets a completed response follow a developer-supplied JSON Schema rather than relying only on a request for valid JSON.
A useful application is extracting a defined set of information from unstructured material. Supply the text or document image, define the fields and explain how to represent a missing value. An illustrative request is identifying a document’s topic, relevant conditions and open questions in a schema that the next application stage can consume. Keep the distinction between information stated in the source and an inference visible in the result.
For a visual task, provide a legible screenshot, photograph or diagram and identify the detail that matters. Include the context needed to interpret the visible state or relationship. For writing, define the reader, purpose, tone and facts that must be preserved. The model’s direct output is text or structured text, while a tool may perform a separate operation or create another artifact.
The producer’s context guide explicitly lists 128,000 total context tokens and a maximum output of 16,384 tokens for gpt-4o-2024-08-06. Its current model card uses this snapshot for the published GPT-4o details and gives a knowledge cutoff of October 1, 2023. The source material, conversation and requested answer share the context budget. Preserve the useful earlier facts and allow room for the complete result.
OpenAI documents streaming, function calling, Structured Outputs and fine-tuning for this edition, with fine-tuning of the exact August 6 model named in the API changelog. The family’s producer tool set includes web and file search, image-generation tooling, code interpretation and MCP connections. Applications expose their operations, execute their actions and return actual results for a follow-up. A structured final response and a function request have different roles.
Structured Outputs supports a subset of JSON Schema, and applications need to handle explicit refusals and interrupted or incomplete responses separately. The producer also documents Predicted Outputs for regenerating known text or code with minor changes. That prediction path supports text output and excludes function calling; its documented controls differ from an ordinary tool-using request.
Prepare a final artifact that can be assessed against the source: extracted fields, a proposed reply, an edited document or an explanation. Check the important facts as well as the format, and name any condition the supplied material does not establish. A focused follow-up can then revise one field, answer a missing question or refine the same result for its intended reader.
Practical task
Extract a document record with unknowns
Technical example in English
Extract a document record with unknowns
Extract fields from this notice: “Case Q18 concerns a damaged parcel. The customer asks for a replacement. No delivery date is given.” Request a record containing case_id, topic, requested_remedy, delivery_date and evidence. Use null for an absent date and preserve the case identifier exactly. Do not infer shipment status.Expected result
A structured text record with the five named fields, source evidence and an explicit missing date.Check the result
Check each field against the notice and confirm that a replacement request is not recorded as an approved replacement.Ailoot Ultra · OpenAI Chat POST /v1/chat/completions openai/gpt-4o-2024-08-06
