OpenAI: GPT-4o-mini

GPT-4o mini is OpenAI’s small model for focused text and image tasks. Use it to classify a message, extract fields from supplied material, explain a screenshot or draft a reply, with text output and support for Structured Outputs and function calling.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

GPT-4o mini is a small OpenAI model for focused tasks. It accepts text and images and returns text, including structured responses. A task can combine a short instruction with a passage, a screenshot or another relevant image, then request a specific result such as extracted fields, a category or a draft reply.

Turn supplied material into a compact result

For message classification, provide the categories and explain how to handle a message that fits more than one. Ask for the selected category and the part of the message that supports it. For extraction, name the fields and the treatment of values the source does not contain. Preserve the original identifiers so each result can be traced to its input.

A drafting task can supply the customer’s question, the relevant product information and the point the reply must convey. Ask for a response within a defined length or tone. For rewriting, provide the original passage and state what may change: wording, length or organization. Keep names, quantities and the intended meaning explicit.

Ask a precise question about an image

An image task can request the visible message in a screenshot, a description of a product detail or a comparison between two labeled images. Point to the relevant region and state what the result should contain. For a screen error, for example, ask for the readable error text and the interface element involved. Review extracted details against the supplied image before passing them into another operation.

This model’s documented output is text. A visual question therefore produces an explanation, description or extracted information from the input image. Provide a readable source and preserve its label when several images appear in one task.

Shape the answer for an application

OpenAI documents Structured Outputs and function calling for GPT-4o mini. A structured response can follow field names and types chosen for the application. Check both its structure and its content against the input before storing or using the result.

In a function workflow, the application exposes a function and executes a requested call. It then returns the actual result for the model to use. A narrow function description and explicit argument rules help keep the request connected to the task being performed.

The manufacturer lists a 128,000-token context window and a maximum output of 16,384 tokens for the documented snapshot. Use the context for relevant material and leave space for the answer. A focused extraction may need only a few fields; a longer document comparison benefits from labeled excerpts and a defined question.

Practical task

Extract an appointment request

Technical example in English

Extract an appointment request

Extract fields from this message: 'Hi, I am Morgan. Please move booking B-18 from Tuesday to Friday afternoon; I cannot attend in the morning.' Return name, booking ID, current day, requested day and time preference. Preserve the reference exactly and mark any precise requested time as unknown.

Expected result

A compact labelled record with the five requested fields and an explicit unknown precise time.

Check the result

Friday afternoon is a preference rather than an invented clock time, and B-18 remains exact.
