About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
GPT-5.1-Codex-Max is OpenAI’s Codex edition built for long-running, detailed agentic coding. It accepts text and images and produces text. The release describes training on real software-engineering tasks, including code review, frontend work and project changes, together with work in Windows environments.
A central capability is native operation across multiple context windows through compaction. As a long task approaches its window limit, the Codex workflow can compact the history while retaining the important context and continue in a fresh window. The maker presents this as a way to sustain project-scale refactors, deep debugging and extended agent loops. It is a continuation process rather than a claim that an entire long session occupies one context window.
For a project change, provide the desired behavior, relevant files and rules governing edits. An illustrative request is to refactor several related components while preserving their public behavior: identify the relationships, propose coordinated changes and specify how the resulting behavior should be checked. For debugging, include the observed failure, expected result and evidence already gathered. The working environment’s file contents, command output and checks inform the model’s next decision.
OpenAI’s model card gives a 400,000-token context window, a maximum output of 128,000 tokens and a knowledge cutoff of September 30, 2024. The Max release recommends medium reasoning effort for ordinary use and introduces xhigh for work that benefits from longer analysis. Reasoning and visible output both require space in the task’s context. Keep the success criterion and significant decisions available as the workflow continues.
The model’s documented interface is Responses only. Its card lists streaming, Structured Outputs, function calling, image input, web search and prompt caching; the exact listed tools include functions and web search. In a Codex-like environment, application-provided operations read and search files, execute commands and return actual results. The release’s sandbox, network settings and terminal logs describe the surrounding Codex product environment rather than the model’s direct text output.
For frontend work, provide the relevant screenshot or design reference and explain the user behavior it should support. For a review, request concrete findings tied to dependencies or requirements. A useful final artifact identifies the affected files, explains the substantial changes and reports the results of checks actually completed. Keep remaining steps specific, so a long engineering task ends with a result that can be assessed against its original goal.
Practical task
Refactor duplicated email normalization
Technical example in English
Refactor duplicated email normalization
Two Python functions disagree: signup uses email.strip().lower(), while lookup uses email.lower(). Users with surrounding spaces can sign up but cannot be found consistently. Propose a shared normalize_email function and coordinated changes to both callers without changing their public signatures. Include regression cases for spaces, case differences and an already normalized address.Expected result
A shared helper, both caller changes and three concrete regression-test proposals.Check the result
Both paths use the same normalization and preserve their existing public signatures.Ailoot Ultra · OpenAI Chat POST /v1/chat/completions openai/gpt-5.1-codex-max
