OpenAI: GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini

The smaller GPT-5.1-Codex edition is suited to narrower supporting coding tasks. It accepts text and images and returns text or code, with the producer documenting function calling and Structured Outputs for a tool-connected workflow.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

GPT-5.1-Codex Mini is OpenAI’s smaller edition of GPT-5.1-Codex. It preserves the Codex role in agentic coding while providing a separate choice from the full Codex and Max editions. The model accepts text and images and produces text. The producer describes the Mini edition as less capable than the full GPT-5.1-Codex model, making a clearly bounded assignment a useful way to apply it.

An illustrative task is a targeted edit to one part of a codebase. Provide the intended behavior, the relevant code and constraints on what may change. Ask the model to explain the current handling of an input, identify the proposed change and produce the code for that scope. For debugging, supply the observed failure and expected result, together with any command or check output that informs the diagnosis.

A supporting task in a larger process can instead ask for a code explanation, a focused review of a file or a proposed verification step. Give it its own completion criterion and result format. Keep the relevant definitions and the evidence the next stage needs in the response. This makes the output useful to the broader workflow without assuming that Mini has the same task capacity as another Codex edition.

OpenAI’s specification lists a 400,000-token context window, a maximum output of 128,000 tokens and a knowledge cutoff of September 30, 2024. The documented interface is Responses. The card lists streaming, Structured Outputs, function calling, image input, prompt caching, evaluations and stored-completion facilities; its listed tools include functions and web search. Current caching guidance includes this exact model among those with optional extended retention of up to 24 hours.

The application supplies the working environment, executes its operations and returns actual results. For an interface-related edit, an image can show the relevant state or layout, while written instructions define the expected interaction. The model’s output remains text or code for the task, distinct from an operation completed in the environment. Extended caching is a producer feature for eligible repeated context, not evidence that any particular request has reused a cache.

Ask for a concrete final artifact: a proposed patch, explanation, review finding or plan for checking the changed behavior. Tie each substantial change to a requirement and separate the checks already performed from those still needed. For a follow-up, supply the new evidence and identify the part of the result that should change. The output can then support a specific next decision in the development process.

Practical task

Fix a one-function string normalizer

Technical example in English

Fix a one-function string normalizer

Fix this JavaScript function: const normalize = s => s.trim().toLowerCase();. Requirement: strings are trimmed and lowercased; null and undefined return an empty string; other types throw TypeError. Keep the function’s one-argument interface. Provide tests for " A ", null, undefined and 12, and explain the added branches.

Expected result

A focused replacement function and four tests with a short branch explanation.

Check the result

Check that numbers are rejected instead of silently converted to strings, while null and undefined are handled explicitly.
