OpenAI: GPT-5.1-Codex

The GPT-5.1 Codex edition is optimized for agentic coding in a tool-connected environment. It accepts text and images and develops code or explanations from project material and actual tool results, with its underlying snapshot regularly updated.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

GPT-5.1-Codex is OpenAI’s GPT-5.1 Codex edition for agentic coding in Codex and similar environments. It accepts text and images and produces text. The maker keeps this coding specialization separate from the general-purpose GPT-5.1 model and the Codex Mini and Max editions. Its documented underlying model snapshot is regularly updated.

A useful task gives the model an engineering objective and the project evidence needed to pursue it. Supply the required behavior, related files and restrictions on changes. An illustrative request is to inspect the code path for a particular input, identify the component that needs modification and propose a patch connected to the expected result. For a failure, include the observed behavior, expected behavior and the relevant output already gathered.

In an agentic coding workflow, the environment reads files, runs operations and returns actual results for the next decision. The model can use those results to revise an approach or continue an implementation. Define the available actions and the task’s completion criterion. A request to perform an operation and the result returned after it runs are different kinds of evidence; the final explanation should keep that distinction visible.

For frontend work, provide a screenshot or other visual reference along with the intended interaction. Identify the state or detail the implementation needs to preserve. Images serve as input evidence, while the model’s direct result remains text, including code, a change proposal or an explanation of behavior. A visual reference does not create a separate image-output capability for this edition.

OpenAI specifies a 400,000-token context window, a maximum output of 128,000 tokens and a knowledge cutoff of September 30, 2024. The producer’s interface is Responses only, with streaming, Structured Outputs, function calling, image input, web search and prompt caching. The exact model-card tool list includes functions and web search. Current cache documentation includes optional extended retention of up to 24 hours for this model; whether a request reuses cached material depends on the eligible prefix and its retention.

Prepare the final artifact around the requested engineering outcome. Ask for the affected files, significant edits and results of checks actually performed. If a proposed solution still depends on a missing fact or an unperformed operation, identify that point specifically. A focused patch proposal, code explanation or review finding is useful when it is tied to the original requirements and the project evidence available in the workflow.

Practical task

Review a pagination boundary

Technical example in English

Review a pagination boundary

Review this JavaScript pager: function page(items, offset, limit) { return items.slice(offset, limit); }. The contract treats limit as a count, so offset 2 and limit 3 should return indices 2, 3 and 4. Propose the smallest patch and tests for a middle page, an empty input and a page beyond the end.

Expected result

A focused function patch, a diagnosis and three behavioral test cases.

Check the result

Check the end index uses offset plus limit and that the function does not mutate items.
