OpenAI: GPT-5.2-Codex

A GPT-5.2 edition optimized for long-horizon agentic coding. It accepts text and images and supports project-scale refactors, migrations and debugging in a tool-connected environment, with native context compaction for continued work.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

GPT-5.2-Codex is OpenAI’s GPT-5.2 edition optimized for agentic coding in Codex and similar environments. It accepts text and images and produces text. The model is designed for long-horizon software engineering, where project context, results from tools and the decisions already made affect the next step.

The manufacturer’s release describes large code changes such as refactors, migrations and feature development, together with improved work in Windows environments. Native context compaction supports extended sessions by retaining the important state as the conversation grows. This is a continuation mechanism for a long task, distinct from a larger numerical context window or a guarantee that every detail of a project will fit into one request.

For a code change, supply the required behavior, the relevant files and the constraints that the solution must preserve. An illustrative request is to migrate a component while keeping its public behavior consistent: identify the dependencies, propose coordinated changes and state how the behavior should be checked. For a failure, include the observed result, the expected result and the conditions that reproduce the problem. Actual file and command results become evidence for the next decision in the agent’s environment.

Visual input can supply a design mock, screenshot, technical diagram or chart connected to the engineering task. The release describes interpreting these materials during coding sessions. Identify the important state or relationship in the image and explain what the implementation should do with it. The output remains text, including code or instructions for the connected tools; a visual reference does not turn this model into an image generator.

OpenAI lists a 400,000-token context window, a maximum input of 272,000 tokens and a maximum output of 128,000 tokens, with a knowledge cutoff of August 31, 2025. The supported reasoning-effort choices are low, medium, high and xhigh. The model’s documented interface is Responses, with streaming, Structured Outputs, function calling, image input, web search and prompt caching. Its exact listed tools include functions, web search, hosted shell and skills.

Applications supply their working environment, execute their operations and return actual results. The release also describes additional safeguards around cybersecurity-related work. Define a concrete completion criterion for the engineering task and request a final artifact that links the affected files, significant changes and completed checks to the original behavior. Keep a proposed check separate from one that has run, so the result can support the next stage of development.

Practical task

Migrate a result key consistently

Technical example in English

Migrate a result key consistently

Two Python files use a result key. calc.py: def compute(x): return {'total': x * 2}. view.py: def render(result): return str(result['total']). Migrate the internal key to 'amount' while preserving the displayed value and compute's public function name. Return both changed file blocks and an assertion for render(compute(3)).

Expected result

Two coordinated file changes and a regression assertion for the composed behavior.

Check the result

Both producer and consumer must use amount while the displayed result remains the same.
