OpenAI: GPT-5.4 Pro (batch)
The separate GPT-5.4 Pro edition uses additional computation for difficult reasoning and professional work. It accepts text and images and develops a text response through OpenAI’s Responses interface, with medium, high and xhigh effort settings.
About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
GPT-5.4 Pro is OpenAI’s separate Pro edition of GPT-5.4. It uses additional computation to work through difficult questions and develop a fuller response. The model accepts text and images and produces text. Pro is part of this model’s identity, distinct from the Pro reasoning-mode setting introduced for GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 base models.
The GPT-5.4 family release places the model in complex professional work, combining reasoning and coding with tasks involving documents, presentations and spreadsheets. An illustrative Pro request is to compare several implementation approaches against a set of dependent requirements, identify the conditions that determine the choice and produce an explicit recommendation. For a document task, supply the question, source material and criteria so that the conclusion has a clear basis.
OpenAI specifies a 1,050,000-token context window and a maximum output of 128,000 tokens for GPT-5.4 Pro, with a knowledge cutoff of August 31, 2025. Its supported reasoning-effort choices are medium, high and xhigh; medium is the default. Reasoning also occupies token space. Organize a long input around the relevant source material and leave room for analysis and the requested final artifact.
The producer documents this Pro model in the Responses API only, supporting multi-turn model interactions before the final response. Difficult requests can take several minutes; OpenAI recommends background execution to avoid the connection timeouts associated with waiting synchronously for long work. In that workflow, the application keeps the response identifier, checks whether work is queued or in progress and retrieves the result once a terminal state is reached.
The model card lists streaming, function calling, web and file search, image input, image-generation tooling and MCP support. Its exact producer tool set also includes tool search, patch operations and computer use. These tools are separate from the model’s text output. Applications expose the relevant operations, execute their own actions and provide the actual results for continued work. The separate GPT-5.4 Pro tool list should be used for this edition rather than assuming every feature of another GPT-5.4 model is identical.
Prepare a clear completion criterion and result structure. For engineering work, request the affected behavior, the proposed solution, the dependencies it changes and the evidence needed to verify it. For analysis, distinguish supplied facts, inferred relationships and unresolved conditions. Identify the important detail when an image supports the question. A useful final artifact is a specific code proposal, decision memo or plan that connects its substantial choices to the original goal and materials.
