OpenAI: GPT-5 (batch)
GPT-5 is a reasoning model for coding, text-and-image tasks and agentic workflows. It supports configurable reasoning and answer detail, and can combine project or document evidence with results from application tools.
About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
GPT-5 is OpenAI’s reasoning model for coding and agentic tasks across domains. It accepts text and images and produces text. The developer release distinguishes the API reasoning model from the non-reasoning chat selection, and describes coding collaboration, frontend work, instruction following and workflows that connect a sequence of tool results.
For engineering work, supply the required behavior, relevant files and constraints on changes. An illustrative request is to inspect how components interact, identify a problem in their handling of an input and develop a coordinated change proposal. For frontend work, provide the intended interaction and a visual reference. For a document question, identify the decision, source material and required sections so the response has a concrete purpose.
The producer documents minimal, low, medium and high reasoning effort, with medium described as the default in the developer release. Answer verbosity is a separate control with low, medium and high choices; medium is the documented default, while an explicit instruction about the output takes priority. This distinction lets a task request a concise result while still allocating the analysis appropriate to its complexity.
OpenAI lists a 400,000-token context window, a maximum input of 272,000 tokens and a maximum output of 128,000 tokens for GPT-5, with a knowledge cutoff of September 30, 2024. Reasoning and visible output share the generated-token budget. Keep the relevant source material and success criteria available, and allow room for the analysis and final answer rather than filling the entire window with unrelated context.
The producer lists Responses, Chat Completions and Batch interfaces, streaming, Structured Outputs, function calling, file and image inputs, web and file search and prompt caching. Its exact model-card tools include image generation, code interpretation and MCP connections. The developer release also documents parallel tool calling, visible progress messages between actions and custom tools that accept plain text with optional grammar constraints. Applications execute their operations and return the actual results used in the next decision.
Current caching guidance includes optional extended retention of up to 24 hours for GPT-5, with reuse dependent on an eligible retained prefix. For the task itself, define the result and evidence that would count as completion. A proposed patch, structured analysis or document is useful when its significant choices connect to the supplied requirements and facts. Keep the results of completed checks separate from actions still proposed, so the final response can support the next stage of work.
