About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
gpt-oss-20b is OpenAI’s smaller general-purpose open-weight model for reasoning and developer workflows. It accepts text and returns text. The maker publishes 21 billion total parameters with 3.6 billion active parameters per token. It is the 20b edition of the gpt-oss family, separate from the larger 120b edition and from the policy-classification Safeguard model.
The producer describes local and specialized use cases and a text-only training set focused on STEM, coding and general knowledge. An illustrative task is explaining a code fragment under stated assumptions and proposing a focused change. A text-analysis task can instead compare descriptions against explicit criteria or turn working notes into a useful set of findings. Give the model the source material and the result needed by the reader or next application step.
The published mixture-of-experts architecture has 24 layers, 32 experts and four active experts per token. OpenAI’s original MXFP4 release of the expert weights is designed to fit within 16 GB of memory. The weights are released under Apache 2.0 and can be fine-tuned for specialized work. These producer properties describe the published model, allowing a developer to distinguish its size and customization role without assuming the setup used by a particular application.
OpenAI’s documentation lists a 131,072-token context window, a maximum generated output of 131,072 tokens and a knowledge cutoff of June 1, 2024. The available context has to accommodate the supplied material, analysis and final answer. The model supports low, medium and high reasoning levels. The required Harmony format keeps internal analysis and the final response in distinct channels, and the producer states that raw analysis should not be shown directly to end users.
The maker documents function calling, web browsing, Python code execution through tools and Structured Outputs. The listed model features also include streaming; its documented tool environment includes functions, code interpretation, MCP connections and web search. Applications expose and execute their operations and return actual results for the next decision. The final text should distinguish a proposed action from a completed operation and its returned evidence.
For a focused workflow, define the required fields, constraints and completion criterion. Request an explanation tied to the code or a conclusion tied to the supplied text, then use a follow-up to address one missing detail. A useful final artifact is a specific proposed edit, comparison, brief or structured result that preserves the necessary facts and names any condition still unresolved.
Practical task
Correct a weighted average
Technical example in English
Correct a weighted average
Explain the error in this Python expression for average unit cost: sum(price for price, quantity in batches) / len(batches). Input batches are [(10, 2), (4, 8)], where each tuple contains unit price and unit count. Propose a weighted calculation, state how zero total quantity should be handled and show checks for the supplied data and an empty list.Expected result
A corrected function, a short weighting explanation and ordinary/zero-quantity test cases.Check the result
Check that quantities weight both the numerator and denominator and empty input has explicit behavior.Ailoot Ultra · OpenAI Chat POST /v1/chat/completions gpt-oss-20b
