OpenAI: o1

OpenAI’s o1 reasoning model works through complex problems using text and images. It supports function calling, Structured Outputs and developer instructions for tasks that need to connect conditions, evidence and a concrete final result.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

o1 is OpenAI’s o-series model trained with reinforcement learning for complex reasoning. It works through a problem internally before producing a response. The model accepts text and images and returns text. The producer’s developer release describes multi-step tasks and documents function calling, Structured Outputs, developer messages and vision for the API model.

A useful request provides the question and the material needed to answer it. An illustrative task is comparing two technical approaches against several linked requirements, then identifying the conclusion supported by those requirements. For code, supply the intended behavior and relevant implementation. For a document, identify the passages or facts that should govern the answer and define the result the reader needs.

Visual input can support a scientific, manufacturing or coding task when the image supplies relevant evidence. Provide the diagram or screenshot and identify the detail that matters; add any definitions or conditions the image alone does not establish. Developer instructions can specify tone, style and task behavior, while the producer also documents reasoning-effort control for the amount of work before the answer.

OpenAI lists a 200,000-token context window, a maximum output of 100,000 tokens and a knowledge cutoff of October 1, 2023. Input, internal reasoning and visible output occupy context space. Prepare a long request around the useful evidence and leave room for analysis and the final artifact. The task’s expected answer format and level of detail should be stated explicitly.

The exact model card lists Responses, Chat Completions, Assistants and Batch interfaces, streaming, Structured Outputs, function calling, file inputs/search and image input. Its listed tools include functions, file search and MCP connections. Applications expose their operations, execute their own actions and return actual results. A structured response describes the requested output fields, while a function request describes an operation for the environment to perform.

Define a completion criterion and request a result connected to the source conditions. For a comparison, ask for the supplied facts, selected approach and unresolved assumptions to remain distinguishable. For a proposed change, identify the expected behavior and the evidence needed to verify it. A useful final artifact is a specific explanation, plan, code proposal or set of findings that can be checked against the original material and refined in a focused follow-up.

Practical task

Compare two backup approaches

Technical example in English

Compare two backup approaches

Compare these backup options against three requirements: daily recovery point, recovery within two hours and an independent copy. [A] Nightly backup to the same disk; restore test took one hour. [B] Weekly backup to another device; restore test took 90 minutes. Identify satisfied and unmet requirements and whether either option alone meets all three.

Expected result

A three-requirement matrix and a conclusion distinguishing recorded test results from unsatisfied conditions.

Check the result

Verify same-disk backup does not satisfy the independent-copy rule and weekly backup does not satisfy daily recovery.
