About the model
This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.
o3-mini is a small reasoning model from OpenAI. It takes text and produces text, with a focus on working through a problem before answering. A technical assistant can use it to examine a failing function, compare possible explanations for an observation or develop a mathematical argument. Give it the relevant evidence and define what the answer must establish.
Reasoning around a concrete problem
For a code diagnosis, supply the function, its inputs, the observed failure and the expected behavior. Ask for the smallest change that addresses that difference, followed by test cases that would distinguish the proposal from the current behavior. Keep unrelated files out of the brief unless they affect the failure. The returned code is a proposal to inspect and run in the development environment.
For a calculation, state the units, assumptions and required precision. Ask for the result together with the relationships used to obtain it. For a scientific or engineering question, provide the observations and ask which conclusions follow from them and what additional measurement would separate competing explanations. This keeps a long answer tied to a checkable task.
Structured answers and functions
OpenAI documents Structured Outputs and function calling for o3-mini. A structured task can specify the fields needed by the next step, such as a diagnosis, supporting observations and a proposed test. Define how an absent value should appear, then check the returned fields against the supplied material before using them.
Function calling lets the model request a function exposed by an application. The application supplies the function definitions, executes a selected call and returns its result. Describe each function narrowly enough that its inputs and consequences are clear. A requested call and an executed operation are separate steps; retain the actual operation result when building the next prompt.
Plan the working context
The manufacturer lists a 200,000-token context window and a maximum output of 100,000 tokens for the documented snapshot. These are different budgets: a large collection of source material still needs room for the answer. Set the requested result length around the task, whether that is a compact patch or a longer explanation.
This edition’s model inputs and outputs are text. For evidence held in a document or image, prepare the relevant readable text and preserve its source labels. Number the excerpts or code regions you want compared, and ask the answer to retain those identifiers. The result can then be reviewed against the exact material that supported it.
Practical task
Locate an off-by-one defect
Technical example in English
Locate an off-by-one defect
Diagnose this Python function: 'def first_three(xs): return xs[:2]'. Requirement: return up to the first three elements without changing xs. Show the smallest correction and tests for a four-element list, a two-element list and an empty list. Explain the slice boundary in one sentence. Treat the tests as proposals until run.Expected result
A one-line correction, three assert tests and a sentence explaining the exclusive slice endpoint.Check the result
The four-element case returns three elements while shorter lists remain safe and the original list stays unchanged.Ailoot Ultra · OpenAI Chat POST /v1/chat/completions o3-mini
