OpenAI: o3 Pro

The separate o3-pro edition uses additional computation for difficult reasoning. It accepts text and images and returns text, with function calling and Structured Outputs; its producer workflow uses Responses and does not support streaming.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

o3-pro is OpenAI’s separate o3 edition that uses additional computation for difficult reasoning. The o-series is trained with reinforcement learning to work through a problem before answering. This model accepts text and images and produces text, keeping the Pro edition distinct from the standard o3 model and from later Pro execution-mode settings.

A practical use is a technical question with several dependent conditions. Supply the complete problem, the evidence available and the criteria for choosing an approach. An illustrative task is comparing implementations whose behavior depends on different assumptions, then producing a recommendation that makes those dependencies explicit. A mathematical request should similarly state the domain, known conditions and the required form of the answer.

For visual evidence, provide a clear diagram, screenshot or other image and identify the detail that affects the question. Include the written context that the image does not establish on its own. Ask for a useful result such as an explanation, proposed solution, plan or set of findings. This ties the model’s additional reasoning work to a specific question and artifact.

OpenAI lists a 200,000-token context window, a maximum output of 100,000 tokens and a knowledge cutoff of June 1, 2024. Reasoning occupies space alongside the input and visible answer. The producer documents o3-pro through Responses for multi-turn model interactions before the final response, with Batch also listed in the specification. Difficult requests can take several minutes, and the maker recommends background execution for long-running work.

The native model card confirms that streaming is not supported, while function calling and Structured Outputs are supported. Its documented tool set includes functions, file and web search, image-generation tooling and MCP connections. An application exposes its operations, executes its actions and supplies actual results. Background status tracking and result retrieval are separate from a stream of answer tokens.

Define the completion criterion before the request. For analysis, ask for the supplied facts, the conclusion and unresolved conditions to remain distinguishable. For a proposed change, identify the expected behavior and the evidence needed to check it. A useful final response connects the significant choices to the original question and treats a proposed tool action separately from an operation already completed in the environment.

Practical task

Analyze a constrained production order

Technical example in English

Analyze a constrained production order

Job A takes two hours. Job B takes one hour and starts only after A. Job C takes two hours and is independent. Two identical machines are available; jobs cannot be split. Find a shortest completion schedule, show its timeline and give a lower-bound argument. State that machines are available at time zero.

Expected result

A two-machine timeline, makespan and concise optimality justification.

Check the result

The schedule must respect the A-before-B dependency and avoid running two jobs on one machine at once.
