PrismML: Ternary Bonsai 2 27B

PrismML’s Ternary Bonsai 2 27B compresses a Qwen3.8-based reasoning and vision-language model into ternary weights. It retains a 262K context, thinking and tool-call behavior, with separate language-model packings and an optional vision component.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Ternary Bonsai 2 27B is PrismML’s low-bit reasoning model based on the Qwen3.8 27B architecture. It is designed to bring text reasoning, coding, visual understanding and agent-oriented work into a smaller local deployment. The language model generates text and tool-call requests; image input uses the separately supplied vision component.

The model uses a hybrid-attention backbone, with approximately three quarters linear attention and one quarter full attention, and a 262K-token context. Ternary language weights take values of minus one, zero or plus one with shared scaling. A stored rotation of the weight basis requires the matching activation transform in the runtime. This is a model representation and runtime requirement, not merely a smaller file extension.

The producer supplies two GGUF packings: dense trits in PTQ1_0 occupy 5.95 GB, while PQ2_0 stores trits in two-bit slots and occupies 7.21 GB. The optional Q8_0 vision pack adds about 0.63 GB. The packings have different unpacking costs and hardware behavior, so the smaller packing is not uniformly faster. These are published artifact sizes; a task’s context and working buffers require additional memory.

Thinking is enabled by default. The maker describes xhigh as the default reasoning effort and medium as an option for shorter responses; low is unsupported and behaves close to xhigh. It also distinguishes thinking from non-thinking generation settings. Allow room for both the reasoning stage and the final answer: a small generation budget can end during thought before an answer appears.

For a repository task, supply the relevant files as text, the behavior to change and an observed failure. Ask for a proposed change and the checks that would distinguish a correction from a new problem. In a tool-connected application, return the executed tool’s result before the next decision. For document analysis, name the sections to compare and the fields or conclusions the answer should contain.

For an image task, provide the visual input with a question tied to something visible in it. A useful result identifies the observed feature and connects it to the requested conclusion. Keep that visual evidence separate from a fact that comes from an external source or a proposed action. The vision component supports interpretation of the image; it does not turn a generated tool request into an executed action.

The published GGUF files require the producer’s low-bit runtime support. The maker notes that an unmodified runtime can reject the types or decode them incorrectly because the matching rotation is missing. Local model choice therefore includes the appropriate packing, vision component and compatible runtime. Separate converted formats and companion draft models are distinct artifacts, rather than properties guaranteed by the general model name.

Practical task

Correct a binary-search boundary

Technical example in English

Correct a binary-search boundary

Review this Python binary search: lo=0; hi=len(a); while lo <= hi: mid=(lo+hi)//2; compare a[mid] with target. An empty list can index out of range. Propose a complete corrected function for a sorted ascending list, returning an index or -1, and tests for empty, missing and endpoint targets.

Expected result

A corrected binary-search function, a boundary explanation and representative tests.

Check the result

Check that every accessed index is within the list and that the loop terminates when the target is absent.
