Qwen: Qwen3 VL 8B Instruct

Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct is Qwen’s dense instruction-focused vision-language model for text, images and video, returning text or code. It supports document reading, visual coding, spatial questions and video analysis, with 32-language OCR and a native 262,144-token context.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

The 8B Instruct vision-language edition

Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct is the dense, instruction-focused 8B edition of Qwen3-VL. It combines text with images or video and produces text, including code. It remains separate from the reasoning-enhanced Thinking edition and from sparse expert models in the same family. Choose it for a focused visual instruction, document question or editable artifact whose result can be compared with the supplied evidence.

Visual agents and visual coding

The maker describes recognition of computer or mobile interface elements, understanding their functions and using tools in a visual-agent workflow. Provide a screenshot and a concrete goal, then ask which visible controls correspond to that goal and what evidence supports the choice. Connected software performs actions; recognizing an interface does not independently give the model control of a device.

Visual coding includes producing diagram content and HTML, CSS or JavaScript from images or video. Supply the layout reference together with functional requirements and the required editable output. Ask for source structure and styles separately when that makes review easier. Generated code is a text artifact; it still needs a development workflow to render and assess its behavior.

Spatial perception and long material

Qwen documents reasoning about object positions, viewpoints and occlusions, with two-dimensional grounding and support for three-dimensional grounding. Name the target object and state the relationship being examined. A result about relative position is an inference from the image, not a calibrated physical measurement.

The native context is 262,144 tokens. The family describes books and hours-long video, with second-level event indexing and expansion to roughly one million tokens through configuration. Representation, frame sampling and the configured sequence limit determine what material is processed. A large context does not guarantee complete recall of every page or frame. Preserve timing when asking for a video event account.

Multimodal reasoning, recognition and OCR

The family supports STEM and mathematical questions, causal analysis and evidence-based visual explanations. Provide the full statement alongside a diagram and request the values and relationships used before the conclusion. Recognition covers a broad range of people, products, landmarks, plants, animals and media characters; a plausible label should be checked when identification matters.

OCR covers 32 languages and is designed to improve reading under low light, blur or tilt, including specialized vocabulary and long-document structure. Provide a legible page and ask for named fields, quotations or a structured table that can be checked against it. Text and visual understanding are combined, so a question can connect a paragraph with a figure and the user’s instructions.

Architecture updates

The published dense text configuration has 36 layers. Interleaved-MRoPE represents time, width and height for video reasoning. DeepStack combines features from multiple visual-encoder levels, and text–timestamp alignment grounds events in temporal references. These architecture features describe the model’s representation; they do not establish a fixed response time or exact physical accuracy.

Preparing input

The maker’s family examples cover text-only requests, single or multiple images and video. Label visual inputs and state their relationship. Image and video pixel budgets are separate: an image budget concerns one image, while a video budget concerns pixels across sampled frames. Explicit image dimensions are aligned to multiples of 32. The documented video default is two frames per second, with rate or frame-count controls in supported workflows.

The helper workflow preserves video metadata and advises avoiding duplicate resizing when the media has already been resized. For a document task, retain page identifiers; for a clip, ask for the event, relevant interval and visible evidence. These preparation examples apply the documented capabilities rather than guarantee exact extraction or temporal precision.

Generation guidance and limits

This exact card gives separate task presets. Visual-language tasks use temperature 0.7, top_p 0.8, top_k 20, repetition penalty 1.0 and presence penalty 1.5, with a 16,384-token output allowance. Text tasks use temperature 1.0, top_p 1.0, top_k 40, repetition penalty 1.0 and presence penalty 2.0, with a 32,768-token allowance. These are producer recipe budgets, not independently established hard output ceilings or separate model identities.

The family’s long-context procedure uses YaRN, with a factor of two or three suggested when extending its interleaved positions from 256K to about 1M. Do not copy a factor of four from another Qwen family. Reserve space for the answer alongside visual and text input, and verify OCR, calculated conclusions and generated source against the original material. Keep the exact Instruct edition rather than import a Thinking checkpoint’s generation or control contract.

Practical task

Read a text diagram relationship

Technical example in English

Read a text diagram relationship

Use this text rendering of diagram D4: source A feeds filter B; B feeds tanks C and D; only D connects to drain E. List the directed path from A to E and name the tank on that path. Do not add physical dimensions or connections absent from the rendering.

Expected result

A labeled directed path and the tank identifier supported by D4.

Check the result

The path must follow the stated arrows and must not add a C-to-E connection.
