Qwen2.5-Math-7B

Alibaba’s instruction-tuned 7B mathematical model for English and Chinese problems. It supports step-by-step text reasoning and tool-integrated reasoning, combining explanations with programs when an interpreter is connected.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Qwen2.5-Math-7B-Instruct is Alibaba’s instruction-tuned 7B model for mathematical problem-solving. It takes a text problem and produces a written solution. The Qwen2.5-Math series focuses on mathematics in English and Chinese; the manufacturer recommends this mathematical scope rather than unrelated general-purpose tasks. The Instruct edition is intended for a conversational instruction format, while Qwen2.5-Math-7B is the separate base edition used for completion, few-shot inference and further fine-tuning.

The model supports two documented approaches: Chain-of-Thought (CoT) and Tool-integrated Reasoning (TIR). CoT develops the solution through a sequence of written steps. The manufacturer notes that CoT can struggle with accurate computation and complex mathematical or algorithmic problems; TIR is intended to improve precise calculation and symbolic work. TIR combines natural-language reasoning with programs for computation, symbolic operations or algorithmic work. That distinction matters for a problem where the numerical calculation is as important as the explanation. The maker demonstrates TIR with local code execution: a connected interpreter performs the program’s calculations, and the reasoning workflow uses those results. A request for program-based reasoning alone does not execute the program.

The mathematical specialization includes Chinese and English instruction data and tool-integrated reasoning data in post-training. The published 7B-Instruct configuration sets a 4,096-token positional window. Prepare a focused problem statement with the necessary definitions and intermediate work, allowing room for the resulting solution. The model’s documented input and output are text, so present relevant expressions, conditions and diagram labels in written form.

For a worked solution, provide the complete question, the known values, the domain of each variable and what must be found or proved. Ask for the chosen method, the justified transformations and the final result in the notation you need. The manufacturer’s examples distinguish a prompt for step-by-step reasoning from one that asks the model to integrate reasoning with programs; both request the final answer in the LaTeX form \boxed{}. You can specify an exact symbolic answer or a numerical result with a stated precision, depending on the problem.

For a tutoring or checking workflow, include the learner’s intermediate steps and identify the point that needs examination. An illustrative task is to compare two proposed algebraic transformations, explain the condition under which each is valid and substitute the resulting value back into the original equation. For problems with several cases, state the allowed ranges and ask for each case to be handled explicitly. This produces a concrete review artifact: the problem, a proposed method, the steps to inspect and a final answer that can be checked against the original conditions.

If your mathematical workflow includes an interpreter, specify the calculation the program should perform and retain its actual result alongside the explanation. Keep the distinction between a proposed program and a completed calculation visible in the output. For a text-only exercise, ask for a written derivation and a separate substitution check. These instructions make use of the model’s mathematical specialization without turning every problem into an unrestricted conversation.

Practical task

Check an algebraic cancellation against its domain

Technical example in English

Check an algebraic cancellation against its domain

Solve (x squared - 9) divided by (x - 3) = 6 over the real numbers. State the original domain restriction before simplifying, show the algebra and check any candidate against the original expression. Finish with the solution set. Use a written derivation only; no calculator or interpreter is available.

Expected result

A domain restriction, justified simplification, candidate check and separate final solution set.

Check the result

The cancelled factor's restriction x != 3 survives, so an excluded candidate is not accepted as a solution.
