Relace: Relace Search

Relace Search is a codebase-retrieval model for coding agents. It explores files through a specific search-tool interface and reports relevant paths and line ranges, giving the main coding model focused context for the task.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Relace Search is Relace’s model behind Fast Agentic Search. Its purpose is to understand the parts of a codebase relevant to a user’s question and return focused findings. The producer’s workflow typically explores the repository over four or five turns of parallel tool calls before reporting the relevant files and line ranges.

The input is a codebase and a research question. The documented tool set includes file and directory viewing, text search, shell commands and a report-back function. The model proposes the tool calls, and an application running the search loop executes them against the repository. The resulting observations are appended to the conversation before the next model turn.

Relace trains the model against a specific system prompt, user-prompt template and tool schemas. The manufacturer warns that changing those conventions can degrade search quality or lead to unexpected behavior. Preserve the exact meanings of the tools and their arguments when preparing the producer’s workflow, rather than replacing them with similarly named tools that behave differently.

For a debugging investigation, ask where the observed behavior is implemented and which conditions influence it. Give the symptom, the expected result and any known entry point. A useful search report identifies the relevant implementation, related checks and the evidence for a possible cause. It supplies context for a later coding step rather than editing the repository as part of the retrieval task.

For a feature request, ask the search model to locate the current flow, the interfaces that a change would affect and the files that establish the existing behavior. The report should identify paths relative to the repository root and the useful line ranges. Relace’s prompt specifically separates existing relevant files from a suggestion that a new file might be needed: a speculative filename should not be reported as a file that was found.

The final artifact is an explanation and a set of relevant source locations. Pass that context to the main coding workflow with the original request and any unresolved question. A path list alone is less useful than a path list that explains why each location matters; keeping the evidence focused also avoids sending unrelated repository material into the next step.

Practical task

Locate a defect in supplied codebase excerpts

Technical example in English

Locate a defect in supplied codebase excerpts

Locate where an empty cart total becomes None using only these excerpts: cart.py:10 def total(items):; 11 if not items: return None; 12 return sum(items). checkout.py:7 amount = total(items); 8 display(amount). Expected empty total is 0. Return relevant existing file/line ranges and why they matter; do not edit code or invent files.

Expected result

A focused source-location report linking the implementation and consumer to the symptom.

Check the result

Report only the supplied existing paths and line ranges, distinguishing the cause from its downstream use.
