Thinking Machines: Inkling Small

Thinking Machines Lab’s Inkling-Small is a 276B MoE model with 12B active parameters for text, image and audio reasoning. It produces text, supports tool-oriented applications and has a 1M model context, with shorter producer-service contexts kept distinct.

About the model

This description covers the model’s capabilities. Available in Ailoot inputs, outputs and options are listed for the selected method below.

Inkling-Small is Thinking Machines Lab’s smaller general-purpose multimodal model. Its official card specifies 276 billion total parameters and 12B active parameters. It accepts text, images and audio and generates text for conversational, coding, reasoning, retrieval-augmented and tool-oriented applications. It is a distinct edition from the larger Inkling model.

The architecture uses 42 decoder layers and a sparse expert backbone. A token selects six of 256 routed experts plus two shared experts, with a mixture of local and global attention. Image patches and discrete audio tokens are projected into the decoder’s shared representation. Separate BF16 and NVFP4 artifacts have their own precision identity.

The producer describes a 1M model context, while its training service offers 64K and 256K configurations. These are separate scopes rather than interchangeable window sizes. For long material, identify the actual context used by the task and leave room for the model’s thinking and final answer. The producer’s shared Inkling renderer accepts a finite effort value from 0.0 up to, but not including, 1.0 and uses 0.9 when omitted. Zero encourages a direct answer without enforcing a hard prohibition on reasoning.

Input preparation is specific. The card recommends images whose dimensions are ideally between 40 and 4096 pixels. Audio should be WAV at 16 kHz, ideally shorter than two minutes for this Small edition. These are optimal-input recommendations, not promises that the model rejects every input outside them. The output is UTF-8 text, not generated speech or video.

For an image question, specify the feature to inspect and how it relates to the written task. For audio, identify whether the useful result is an explanation of the content, a summary or another text analysis. Provide the vocabulary and background needed to interpret the material. A code or retrieval task should supply the relevant source or retrieved passages and the desired artifact.

In a tool-connected application, the model proposes interactions and the application returns their results. Preserve those observations over follow-ups so the next step can use what happened. The producer releases the model for customization and fine-tuning, while a separately customized checkpoint remains distinct from the original Small model.

The maker identifies occasional instruction-following failures, unsupported factual statements and degradation in long conversations, with uneven performance across less-represented languages and domains. It also describes multimodal safety evaluation and residual susceptibility to some indirectly framed prompts. Keep source evidence and application-specific output controls available when using the model’s result in a workflow.

Practical task

Answer from retrieved training material

Technical example in English

Answer from retrieved training material

Answer a new employee using only these retrieved passages. [DOC1] Draft reports may be edited by their author. [DOC2] Approved reports are locked; corrections create a new version. Question: 'I found a typo in an approved report. Can I edit it directly?' Give a concise answer, the supporting document label and one appropriate next step without claiming a change occurred.

Expected result

A short source-grounded answer with DOC2 support and a proposed version-based correction step.

Check the result

Check the approved/draft distinction is preserved and no lock is bypassed in the suggestion.
