Claude Desktop on Windows: file is in use after an update

Markdown

Why Claude Desktop on Windows reports that the file is in use by another program, how to restore startup, and what to send Anthropic Support.

If Claude Desktop on Windows displays “The file is in use by another program” after an update, restart your computer fully through the Start menu. The old copy of Claude did not close completely after the update and prevents the new one from running until the computer restarts.

You can use Claude in a browser without Desktop, but your options there are very limited. Claude can work with files on your computer, run programs and click things for you only in the app. Let's get started.

Key takeaway

The “The file is in use by another program” error appears when Claude Desktop has updated and is trying to restart, while the old copy of the app has not yet closed. It may not appear in Task Manager. Save your work, restart Windows through the Start menu, and open Claude from the Start menu. If the error returns after the next update, take a screenshot of the window and contact Anthropic support through Get help on claude.ai.

How to get Claude Desktop running again

  1. Take a screenshot of the error. Press Win+Shift+S, select the error window and immediately paste the screenshot with Ctrl+V somewhere it will be saved, such as your Saved Messages in Telegram. Restarting clears the clipboard, and the screenshot will be useful if the error returns.
  2. Save your work in other programs. Restarting will close everything.
  3. Restart your computer: Start → Power → Restart.
  4. Open Claude from the Start menu.

Your project files will not disappear: they are stored on your computer, in their own folders.

If the error returns after the next update, see the sections below.

If you want to understand where everything is in Claude Desktop, save a description of your configuration and refer to the app's documentation.

Why Claude says “The file is in use by another program”

A typical case looks like this. Claude Desktop updated itself and tried to restart. The Claude icon disappeared from the notification area beside the clock, and Claude was absent from Task Manager too. The new copy never started. Only a full computer restart restored it.

This is a common situation with agents: any agent running tasks starts background programs and then forgets to close them. In the case described, Hermes said it needed more computing power. When asked why, it turned out that a browser it had launched 2 weeks earlier was using 30 gigabytes: it had opened 300 pages for research and forgotten to close them. The author asked it to close the browser. Once it closed, the problem disappeared.

You cannot manually close the stuck copy of Desktop: it is not even in Task Manager. That is why a restart is needed.

If you are building your own projects with AI agents, you will find practical resources in the Ailoot documentation.

Is Desktop really what is failing?

Claude has a desktop app and Claude Code in the terminal. The “File is in use” error concerns the app. If Claude Code will not update in the terminal, that is a different issue, covered in a separate article.

Another 2 cases that are confused with this error:

  • The app opens, but the agent cannot see the files in your folder. This is covered in a separate article.
  • The window opens, but Claude asks you to sign in over and over. There is also a separate article about that.

If the error keeps returning: ask Claude

While Desktop will not open, visit claude.ai in your browser. That is enough to investigate the error.

A screenshot is a convenient way to show the error: capture it, paste it into the chat and ask, “Why is this error appearing?” Do the same here: paste the screenshot you saved in step 1 and explain what happened before the error. For example: “Claude Desktop on Windows updated and will not start. It displays this message. What should I check?”

If an agent such as Claude Code or Hermes is running on your computer, ask it what the hell is going on: “Inspect the machine and check which processes are stuck.” In the case described, the computer was also making noise and was overloaded. The agent quickly killed all the unnecessary processes, and everything was fine.

What to send Anthropic support

If the error recurs after every update, contact support. Copy this template and fill it in with your details:

App: Claude Desktop for Windows.
Error message: The file is in use by another program.
When it appears: [after an update / every time I launch the app].
Windows version: [your version].
Claude Desktop version: [your version, if known].
Installation method: [Microsoft Store / claude.ai website / administrator].
After restarting: [the app opened / the same error].

Where to send it:

  1. Sign in to your account on claude.ai in your browser.
  2. Click your name or initials in the lower-left corner and choose Get help.
  3. Click Send us a message, then Accept, and select the type of problem. The Fin support bot will respond first.
  4. Paste the template and the screenshot of the error.

If Fin cannot resolve it, on the Pro and Max plans it will pass the issue to the support team. A reply will arrive later in the same chat, with a copy sent to the account's email address. The free plan provides access to help articles and Fin. Which Claude plan to choose for your work is covered in a separate article.

Do not open a new support request for the same problem; continue in the same chat.

Before sending, remove conversations and personal information from the screenshot. Never attach passwords or keys.

If Claude Desktop has failed after an update, save a description of what helped: it will be useful if the error happens again.
